This Month's Events:

ALERT: Parking lots for the Appalachian Trail lots fill quickly. To avoid parking fines and/or towing please do not park outside of designated parking areas, on private property, and on the sides of roadways.

South Mountain State Park is a 40-mile long multi-use state park weaving along the South Mountain ridge from the Pennsylvania line to the Potomac River. Part of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range, South Mountain separates the Hagerstown and Cumberland valleys from the Piedmont regions of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

South Mountain State Park is an abundance of geologic, natural, cultural, and historic experiences. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of the Civil War Soldiers who fought at the 1862 Battle of South Mountain, climb to breathtaking views, and experience the solitude of nature.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail follows the crest of the mountain reaching the tallest peaks at Quirauk Mountain (2,150 ft.) and Lambs Knoll (1,758 ft.). Scenic overlooks at Weverton Cliffs, Annapolis Rocks, and High Rock afford amazing views of the landscape. Designated camping areas and shelters are available on first-come-first served basis for backpackers and thru-hikers.

South Mountain State Park has no distinguishable boundary or entrance facility. Designated parking lots are available along the length of the mountain.

The park includes two hunting areas that require a hunting license and knowledge of the Maryland hunting seasons. Due to the remote nature of the hunting areas please visit the Hunting link below for more information.

Guided climbing at Annapolis Rocks requires a special use agreement to be completed in advance.
