On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 1st ACM Workshop on "High Performance Mobile Opportunistic Systems" (HP-MOSys 2012), which will be held in conjunction with the with the 15th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems (MSWiM 2012). We are much honored to be the General Chairmen of such an important and interesting event, which will take place in Paphos, Cyprus, during October 21--25, 2012.
The primary goal of HP-MOSys International Workshop is to bring together computer scientists, industrial engineers and researchers to discuss and exchange experimental or theoretical foundations and results, novel designs and paradigms, work-in-progress, experimental foundations and real-time studies, and trend-setting ideas in the area of Mobile Opportunistic Systems which aim to provide high performance. As the opportunistic paradigm and the associated networks are an emerging networking paradigm where communication between the source and destination occurs on-the-fly and depends on the availability of communication links, new methodologies and algorithmic techniques should be applied ranging from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructures to mobile ones.
The 1st ACM HP-MOSys Workshop attracted research papers and contributions on the above research issues from all around the world. The submitted research papers in HP-MOSys international workshop were carefully reviewed by at least 3 reviewers, where according to the review results, the program committee members selected the shortlisted 9 papers (out of 21 total submitted papers) to be presented in this workshop. This year, we are glad to have an additional Special Session on Performance of Wireless and Mobile Networks, which we believe would be a good contribution to our program. We hope that HP-MOSys would become a worldwide meeting, for science and technology; as well as a forum of great importance for scientists, engineers, and practitioners throughout the world. In HP-MOSys, the authors will present their latest research results, ideas, developments, and applications in all areas of mobile opportunistic communications and networking.

Analytical model of epidemic routing for delay-tolerant networks
Epidemic routing is considered as one of the most effective routing schemes for delay-tolerant networks; indeed, epidemic routing allows for shortest routing delays. Most of the analytical work in the technical literature concentrates on the latency ...
Predicting encounters in opportunistic networks
An opportunistic network is composed of human-carried mobile devices that interact in a store-carry-and-forward fashion. A mobile node stores data and carries it around; when it encounters another node, it may decide to forward the data if the ...
Implementation of a network of mobile sensors for air quality monitoring
Air quality is one of the crucial parameters affecting the perceived quality of life, particularly in urban centers, and it is increasingly becoming a concern for public health officials and the citizens themselves. Currently, air-quality monitoring in ...
Multiple multicast trees for 3d real-time content distribution over P2P networks
Current developments in 3D technology have triggered an increasing user interest in experiencing this technology however the distribution of 3D media to a large amount of users raises significant technical challenges mainly due to bandwidth and delay ...
Traffic sources measurement and analysis in UMTS
In this paper, we show statistical analyses of several types of traffic sources in a UMTS network, namely, voice, video, and data sources. For each traffic source type measurements were collected in order to, on the one hand, gain better understanding ...

This paper elaborates on the design, implementation and performance evaluation of a prototype Radio Resource Management (RRM) framework for opportunistic TV white spaces (TVWS) exploitation, under an auction-based approach. The proposed RRM framework is ...
Message-driven based energy-efficient routing in heterogeneous delay-tolerant networks
Delay-Tolerant Network (DTN) nodes are mostly energy-limited devices that run on battery power. DTN routing strategies on such resource-constrained nodes therefore need to be energy efficient. Contemporary routing protocols such as Two-Hop Routing (2HR) ...
Adaptive counter-based broadcasting scheme in mobile ad hoc networks
Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are formed by wireless devices that communicate without necessarily using the pre-existing network infrastructure such as base station/access point. Broadcasting is a common operation in wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (...
Further analysis and tuning of registered multi-cycle polling in wireless medium access management
Multimedia applications are supported by enhancing polling mechanisms to achieve Quality of Service, QoS, in the IEEE 802 MAC layer. We first briefly introduce the problems of reliability and efficiency with the basic polling medium access, particularly ...
A centralized preventive maintenance strategy for wireless sensor networks
Generally, the Quality of Service (QoS) in a wireless sensor network (WSN) is measured by the sensing area coverage degree and the connectivity between the deployed sensors. To conserve and protect these QoS parameters, we have used a limited number of ...
Analytical modeling of wireless ad hoc networks: degree distribution and maximum clique size
The topic of this paper is modeling of wireless ad hoc networks in order to obtain the mathematical expressions for the maximum clique size and the node degree distribution function. Two types of the node distribution are considered: a uniform ...
