The SILAS model: sexual infections as large-scale agent-based simulation

Published: 26 July 2015 Publication History

Abstract

The SILAS model is an agent-based simulation of human sexual behavior incorporating heterogenous behavior of agents with respect to age, sex, sexual orientation and relationship status. Behavior rules are not only applied to the realization of sexual contacts, but also on ending and forming relationships, death and child birth. Thus, the agent population endogenously re-populates itself. This allows not only to simulate the transmission of sexually transmitted infections between adult agents, but also mother-child infection paths. The model can simulate the effect on the overall population and can therefore be used for the epidemiological, public health or health economic evaluation of tailored interventions for sub-populations. In this paper we describe the use of the SILAS model on syphilis and present preliminary results.
