Beginner to intermediate home improvement
Our house has a lot of old wooden double-hung windows. I want to restore them over the course of the next several years rather than replace them. But I don't have a ton of experience with woodworking tools beyond middle school shop class thirty years ago. What are smaller, useful things I can do to bring my skills up to par? [more inside]
Woodworkers / DIYers of MetaFilter - what's this basement window latch?
I'm making some replacement screen windows for my basement, which has been a fun learning process. The one thing I'm hung up on is getting replacement window latches. They're like bowtie latches, but the right hand side of it is ~1/3 - 1/2" offset from the other to fit over the window frame. [more inside]

Blocking the view while letting light in
I'm looking for a window shade solution that will attractively mask a very ugly building next door, while letting in plenty of light. The window is right above a bed, so it's a focal point and I want it to look nice. Can't do curtains because it's an angled ceiling and it will look awkward. Privacy is not a huge concern. What kind of fabric or design should I consider?
Seeking sunblock for windows
I have installed external shutters on most of the windows on the southeast side of my house, with the goal of blocking out as much sun as possie during summer heatwaves. There is one window (about 65 x 140cm) that still lacks sun protection, so the sun & heat still get in through there. What easy, cheap, and above all effective solutions will keep out most of this sunlight? (Definitions for all three adjectives below the fold.) [more inside]

Tricky window coverings
What are your best ideas for modern window coverings that allow airflow AND can block light effectively? We thought we had found window nirvana when we installed some nice honeycomb-style top-down-bottom-up cordless cellular shades on the big window in my home office. While they block light very well, they don't allow air to flow through. And the metal bottom piece bangs against the window when it's windy. I'd like... [more inside]

Removing a broken window pane
Night before last someone shot my living room window with an airsoft pellet gun. It's a dual-pane window, and only the outer pane was broken -- the inner pane is in tact and undamaged. Help Me Curtain a Bathroom Window
I have a window in my small downstairs half-bathroom. Here it is along with the disgusting curtains that came with the house. I need to block the view. Dog-friendly plants for window with direct light but cold in winter?
I'm looking for dog-friendly plants I can hang in my west-facing window in Brooklyn. It gets a LOT of light when the sun is out and can get uncomfortably warm in the late afternoon...but because it's a window, the glass/sill can get chilly at night and in the winter. Are there any plants that would thrive in these conditions? I'm willing to baby them a little, but I don't necessarily have the greenest of thumbs.

Best privacy device for a ~4x6 foot picture window? Film?
I have a large, fixed picture window at the front of my apartment; while it has blinds, whenever they are open passerby can see right in, as it is at street level. At night someone close enough can catch a glimpse of what's going on inside even with the blinds closed, as the living room and kitchen are right there! What would keep passerby from looking in, without making the room too dark?
Not So Golden Arches

Shade These Windows
I have a condo with this 6'x6' window in a box jutting out from the side of the building with another sloping window at the top along its length. How can I set up a shade that doesn't have this problem? [more inside]
