How to help my little air conditioner cool the room
My room has an old thru-the-wall air conditioner like this model. The landlord mounted it in a wall hole that's a foot above the floor. The A/C blows cool air which hovers near the floor, and the majority of the room is still hot. What can I do to use the A/C more effectively? [more inside]
What is the reference mean referred to in this paper?
World ocean heat content and thermosteric sea level
change (0–2000 m), 1955–2010, which is the source of this data, provides changes in ocean heat content (OHC) since 1955. But what was the ocean heat content in 1955? [more inside]
Help us stay cool through the ...winter
We live in a temperate zone in an apartment building with steam radiator heat. We don't have much control over the heating, so if we don't open our windows in the winter it gets too hot. We'd like to better regulate the temperature, keeping it around 70 degrees more consistently through the night etc. Would a window fan be able to do this? [more inside]
Which (if any) of my produce choices will keep well in my basement?
I'm picking up a bag of produce from a CSA today, and we won't use it soon. Of the CSA's options, will any keep well in the conditions I have? For how long? [more inside]
Best temperature settings with a heat pump?
I recently moved into a place that has a heat pump; my previous experience has been with blown air, baseboard heat or wood burning stoves. Largely as an energy saver (and because I sleep better at lower temps), I’m used to setting the thermostat to 66F at night and then bumping it up to 70 in the morning. Last night we had our first “cold” night - low of 32 degrees - and it took almost an hour for the ambient temp to raise a single degree — and that might have been because I turned on the space heater in the main room.
Temps this week will drop into the teens — how do I set my thermostat so that it doesn’t take 4 hours to bring the place up to a comfortable temp but also don’t have the thing running constantly all night long?
Why won't our room cool?
Our bedroom does not cool when windows are open.
Last night, at bed it was 24C in our room. We had 3 windows open. 2 on the north side, one on the south side. One north wimdow faces the south window dead on. The other north window is in the ensuite bath. Bathroom door open. [more inside]
Durable chemical resistant gloves for the workshop
I have a variety of substances (ethanol, acetone, kerosene, etm.) that I occasionally need to work with. Permanent gloves would be best although I'm open to disposables. The complication is that they need to safely survive storage for long periods at a minimum of 110°F. 130°F would be better. Recommendations would be gratefully received. [more inside]
Temperature play tips in case of nerve injury?
Does anyone have tips for safe and extended temperature play in delicate areas? My partner has some nerve damage and can only experience temperature in some key places. [more inside]
Options for an imbalanced house temperature
Living in a new (to me) house that has three floors that has one central heat/pump (air/heat) and various levels of temperature in the three floors with sleeping temperatures un ideal (too cold in winter, too hot in summer) and very high electricity costs. How have you fixed this? Are there companies that can help honestly provide options? [more inside]
How cold could I comfortably keep my house if I dress really warmly?
I live in the northern midwestern United States and normally heat my house to between 68 and 70 degrees in winter, while typically wearing jeans and a short-sleeved t-shirt. I find these temperatures to be completely comfortable. I have recently been wondering how cold I could keep the house and remain comfortable if I were to wear very warm clothes indoors: thermal underwear, a long-sleeve t-shirt plus a heavy sweater, maybe some light gloves, maybe a hat and some kind of scarf. [more inside]
How can I monitor the temperature over time in several rooms?
I would like to monitor the temperature (humidity would be a nice bonus) in multiple places in my house over time, partly out of curiosity and partly to gather data I can use to help decide on the schedule for my thermostat. I want access to the raw data but a built-in way to see a graph of it would be great too. What are some ways I could do this? [more inside]
Is this actually a human temperature?
A person I know said they have a kidney infection and their temp spiked to 400 degrees before becoming more normal at 103. Is this even possible?
Managing the temperature in my home
The rooms in my house seem to vary quite a lot in temperature and I'm not sure if this is normal or how to fix it. [more inside]
My head is hot. My temp is low. What does this mean?
Historically, I only rarely get fevers. But when I don't feel well, my temperature becomes lower than usual. [more inside]
Limiting global temperature increase to x above "Pre-industrial Levels"
WHAT IS PRE-INDUSTRIAL LEVEL? What is the actual target?
I get that these are averages and not just a single flat number, but we have an idea, right? Why is it so hard to say "1.5 degrees over X TEMPERATURE" ( (or even 1.5 above (x1 thru x2))?
What is the base we're comparing to, or even better... WHAT IS THE END GOAL GIVEN THE VARIOUS TARGETS of .5 - 4 degrees in the models? [more inside]
How do I change this thermopen from celsius to fahrenheit?
I have this thermopen that ostensibly can be changed to degrees F from degrees C but I cannot figure out how. [more inside]
Evaporative cooling inside a freezer?
If you want to make something cooler than its environment, you can wrap it in wet cloth and exploit evaporative cooling (at least, to the extent that the surrounding air can take up more water vapor). Is there a version of this trick that will work in my freezer? [more inside]
What is the Acceptable Temperature Range of a Refrigerator
Our refrigerator, set at 33 F, varies between 35 F and 40 F. Our freezer, set at 0 F, fluctuates between -4 F and 8 F. Are these normal fluctuations, or is our refrigerator broken? (Whole story below the fold, but ultimately this is the question.) [more inside]
Air flow vs. heat flow
Even with the windows and curtains closed, my house warms up during the day and cools off at night. How much of this is due to air exchange with the outside and how much is due to heat conduction? How could I go about estimating this? [more inside]
Babycakes temperature
When using a regular cake recipe but baking it in one of those novelty mini cake pans (like mini muffins but decorative), would you raise, lower or leave unchanged the oven temp?
how low of a low fever is enough to be concerned about?
Even in ordinary times, my resting temp (taken orally with a mercury thermometer) is about 98.0ºF, but often spikes to around 99.0 in the afternoon. Yesterday I hit 99.3 and decided to self-quarantine for a while, but is that really enough of a fever to bother about? What's the accepted level for how low of a low fever is a covid concern? [more inside]
Cool-as-in-temperature shoes
My feet are always too hot. What are some men's-style shoes that are NOT sandals but still very breezy and cool with as much airflow as possible? I'll entertain all options. [more inside]
Fever measurement in low resting temperature?
What counts as a fever if your normal healthy baseline temperature is 35C/95F? My main doc has documented this as a quirk, but it makes home temperature taking a guess. If I feel feverish at 36.5C, is that the equivalent to a ‘normal’ 38.7C fever?
Hot or not?
I had a theory that my oven was running cold. This was based on an observation that everything takes much longer to cook than recipes say. This is true across multiple types of food, and has been observed by several people. Yesterday, I borrowed a Fluke thermometer with a probe from a friend who works in a science lab and.... if anything my oven runs hot?!?!? I'm sitting here watching the temperature oscillate from a little below to somewhat (10 degrees) above the target temperature.
So, what is going on and can I fix it?
Recommend a remote temperature sensor
I'll be traveling, it's winter in Maine, I want to make sure the furnace is running, house is basically warm. Wifi is available, land line is not. I can leave a laptop with no cellular service powered on, but not sure about bluetooth-only sensors. I didn't install a Nest thermostat because it would require running a small wire from the furnace to the living room, so I don't think a Nest sensor alone will work. Price is an issue. Getting an electrician to do any installation would take till June, so simple.
Fix my matcha pudding?

Swimming in cold open water: knowing when to stop / other safety tips
I have the thrilling unexpected gift of several weeks next to a fjord that's easily swimmable when I'd assumed it wouldn't be. After 8 hours total in the fjord over 4 days, I'm feeling confident, but I want to keep being safe – especially after this heat wave fades. I'd love some advice about which sensations in the body you've found to mean it's time to stop (because the experience is so incredible I'm battling some strong "I don't wanna stop" instincts). How are boxes typically kept while being mailed?
I am shipping something that would ideally stay in a specific temperature range. I know about heat packs and cold packs and overnight shipping, but this question is not about any of that. I just want to know - when a box is shipped, what does its transit tend to look like from a temperature perspective around the outside of the box? [more inside]
Shower begins hots, gets colder as the handle turns.
The bath/shower in my kids' bathroom has a single handle on the faucet. It recently broke, so I got a replacement at the hardware store and put the new one one. Easy! Except for some reason, when you turn the handle now, scalding hot water comes out right away. Huh? [more inside]
It's like my own personal climate change

US high & low temperatures on a given date (including Alaska & Hawaii)
Just like the title says -- I'm looking for the highest and lowest recorded temperatures for the entire US on a couple of dates in the recent past -- specifically the 19th and the 20th of January, 2019. The data on the NOAA website excludes Alaska and Hawaii, but I want those states included.

Too hot, too cold to sleep...
I'm very cold when I go to bed, so I sleep with blankets (and mummify myself). Then I wake up too hot, so I remove the blankets. Then I wake up too cold, so I grab the blankets, etc. How can I get the right temperature and stay there? (It's not my thyoid. This has been going on for years and I've had many thyroid tests.) Afternoon hormone(?) problem
Almost every day at work around 3-4pm I get an odd combination of related symptoms. Can you help diagnose the problem?
1. Increased skin surface temperature
2. Can feel blood pumping intensely by touching skin, especially in jugular veins, but also heartbeat. Possibly increased heart rate
3. Itch across most of the body - it's slight, and there's no physical manifestation (no redness or eczema), but it's enough to drive me slightly mad.
4. Tiredness/sleepiness

How do I find the specifics about weather in my city?
I'm about to buy mini-splits for my house (Mitsubishi HyperHeat). The output and efficiency of mini-splits is highly dependent on outdoor temperature. I'm working with an engineer and HVAC installer person, but for my own peace of mind I'd like to see as much data as possible about weather (ideally including humidity) in my city. Is there any website that can tell me how many days historically per year Philadelphia dipped below n number - freezing, 25F, 17F, etc.? And the same with high temperatures in the summer (how many days above 85F, 90F, 100F, etc.)?
Thermostat Question
Spousal difference regarding thermostat. I run cold, wife runs hot. Her argument is that you can always layer. Fair enough, but I find myself needing to pile on sweaters in the middle of summer. Our two kids (5 & 8) are also usually cold inside the house. The thermostat is usually set to 65 degrees. Does 65 degrees year round seem unusually cold in the context of human beings living in a climate controlled house? Household thermometer is currently 62.5 (located in a different room that thermostat).
Best home weather station?
