Musicians and their big feelings

Can anyone help ID this dimly recollected movie clip?
Hopefully this isn't too vague: in the late 80's/early 90's my dad taped Star Wars off've Canadian cable TV for us. At one point during the tape he switched channels by mistake and we saw a really creepy clip from a movie or TV show that's stuck with me for literally decades. If anyone has any ideas what it could be based on my recollection I'd be very grateful. Details inside... [more inside]
Why did people in TV and movies stop wiping their faces?
In recent shows people don't wipe their faces after getting mud, dirt, blood, etc. on them. I'm in my 50s and this feels like a change. I remember watching the commentary on the Evil Dead DVD, in which Bruce Campbell talked about a "continuity wipe" where the actors would intentionally wipe their faces at the end of a scene so that when the movie was cut together, there wouldn't be obvious continuity problems. I noticed that other older shows did that too. What's changed? [more inside]
Memoryholed Film - asking to speak to "The Manager"
In this movie, which may have been a made-for-tv movie, a character is at a place of lodging in the tropics (aloha shirts and the like) and asks to speak to the manager, to which the clerk at the counter pulls out a shotgun that has "The Manager" elaborately carved into the buttstock and sticks it into the character's face.
Any ideas on the movie in question? [more inside]
Identify this movie/tv show - throwing a fake baby
Years ago I saw a scene on television where someone throws a fake baby at a gunman. I've always been curious what it was! [more inside]
What should I watch next?
Seeking suggestions for tv shows and/or movies to watch. Here's a list of favorites:
Parks and Rec
That ‘70s Show
Big Bang Theory
West Wing
Goliath
What other media should I watch, based on the above list?
When did cars stalling fall off as a movie/TV trope (and in...reality?)
I have a subjective feeling (corroborated in conversation with a friend today, which means it's 100% accurate) that what was once a ready standby in film and TV of cars stalling out while e.g. at a traffic light has fallen by the wayside in the last...bunch of years? Does this feel like a thing, and does it correspond fairly directly to changes in automotive technology over the years? [more inside]
a dramatic recreation of our shared trauma
I watched The Comey Rule this week and realized that I need--psychically need--movies and miniseries in the vein of Game Change focused around the previous administration and the resulting fallout. What has come out so far that I've missed, and what's coming down the pike that I can make sure to watch for?
How can I watch DVDs on an iPad?

California/LA based series?
Any TV shows or movies that incorporate land or water consumption crime in California? Obviously "Chinatown" but also looking for any TV series or documentary that may even just touch on it - true or otherwise (e.g. Season 3 of Goliath, Season 2 of True Detective, "Water & Power: A California Heist"). Thanks!
Where do YouTube film and media analysis channels get their clips?
Samples inside. How do the big, fancy Youtube media criticism channels get the media they need to build their videos around? Are they ripping entire blu-rays just for a few seconds of clip? That seems so long and arduous. [more inside]
Movie or TV show about AI Box experiment (the AI escapes)
I remember a movie or TV show about an AI box experiment. The AI escaped by flashing a light at a tiny portion of a laptop screen or something that was inadvertently brought into its view. [more inside]
Cheesy Movie creates horrible childhood memories
When I was a yoof (somewhere around 1988, give or take a few years) I was staying at my Gramma's house for the summer. One afternoon while flipping through TV, and had my first ever exposure to a 'sex scene' in video - a scene which ended in a bizarre Rube-Goldbergian accidental electrocution death for both participants. What in the heck was this movie/show? (specific details inside) [more inside]
NAME! THAT! SHOW! From a single still image.
A few of us were in a meeting with someone with their TV paused in the background. We've become obsessed with figuring out what show/movie it is. [more inside]
Movies set in non-dystopian climate futures?
A friend is writing their thesis about climate change story-telling in movies. They're having trouble finding stories that paint a more hopeful picture of futures where we've actually managed to avert worst-case dystopian scenarios. What fiction (preferably science fiction) movies would you recommend? [more inside]

Looking for a '70s-era futurist documentary
I'm racking my brain trying to come up with the name of a documentary, I believe from the '70s although it could have been from the early '80s, in which futurists were asked for their predictions. I remember them saying that the most valuable assets in the future would be drugs (in the sense of performance-enhancing, I think) and information. It's not Future Shock. [more inside]
Do you remember this funny Coldplay reference?
I need help remembering what this funny Coldplay reference is from. I think a guy had just gotten broken up with and he weepily says “I finally understand Coldplay. We ARE all yellow!” Maybe he was in love instead of dumped. I can’t remember if it was from a movie or a tv show or it could even be from a stand-up routine. Anyone else remember this? I’ve had no luck googling.
SF/Fantasy Movie/Show ID
Posted for a family member: I'm going crazy trying to remember what show or movie I saw a certain plot thread in. Probably fantasy or SF or pseudo-historical, involving an exotic, backward culture with a superstition that twin births were a form of defect in which a single person was born with two bodies, so that a pair of identical twins was raised as a single individual, and natives had a taboo against acknowledging that there was more than one person present, got confused when outsiders asked for the second twin's name, etc. [more inside]

What's good on YouTube Red?

App for notifications about upcoming media?
I like movies, tv, books and music. Is there an iPhone App that lists upcoming items in these (and/or other) categories, allows me to select favorites and then will send me a notification a week or two before said media becomes available? Yeah, I can go through various websites for movies or tv and then add'em to a watch list, but ideally, I'd like it all in one website or app. [more inside]
What was this TV show?
There was a TV show or movie in Britain in the late 90s/early 2000s that was centered around two women (comedians) who played teenage boys. I believe in one of the movies they go to the seaside. What was this show? Who were these comedians? My parents are insisting I made this up.
Not-quite-Nordic not-necessarily-Noir?
The TV show Fargo is great. I really enjoy it. But aside from the great storytelling and filmmaking skill, I realized it ticks some boxes that I want more of:
1) crime
2) in flyover country
3) during the winter
Can you suggest books, movies, or TV shows that meet these criteria?
Movies/TV shows with Korean subtitles in the US itunes store?
Looking for stuff in the itunes store with Korean subtitles, the shows/movies don't have to be Korean. Is it right to assume that Korean-produced movies will all have Korean subtitles? What other stuff has subtitles? Any way to search for this?

Cheese as a weapon of war?
Help! I have a scene from a movie (or possibly a TV show) stuck in my head, and I cannot remember from where it comes. A small country, whose primary export is stinky cheese, is at war with its neighbors. I'd thought it was The Mouse That Roared, but that's about wine, not cheese. [more inside]
Need distracting movies/tv to get through the bad time
My husband left me out of the blue and my heart is hellishly broken and I am trying desperately to make the hours pass until it hurts less. I am looking for recommendations for tv or movies. I can't do too much violence or suspense or romance. I like sci-fi and fantasy, I like nature, quirky things and strong women. I watched a bunch of Elementary until it all seemed the same, then I watched Blindspot but I'm all caught up, then I watched The Lost Room and then rewatched Firefly for the umpteenth time, and Lucy, then some of Misfits. I read Ms. Marvel, I listened to the podcasts The Message and a bunch of The Black Tapes. I have Eat Pray Love cued up and then Howl's Moving Castle. I don't know if this is enough info to go on, but I need to get through the minutes and thought I'd ask. Maybe I'll watch the first season of Veronica Mars again. Help?
I think like half of my AskMe history is identify-this-movie questions.

What was that 1980s TV movie/show with an alien news show?
In the late 1980s, I remember seeing something on television that featured some kids picking up a signal/broadcast from outer space. The broadcast contained an alien news show. It was a standard type of news show with male and female aliens at a news desk with an inset in the top corner. The aliens were sort of heavy-set, not your generic, skinny bug-eyed aliens. I don't think it was intended to be scary but it kind of freaked me out as a 7-year old and it has stuck with me to this day. [more inside]

I am working on diversifying my pop culture experience and am feeling limited by what Netflix thinks I should watch. Please recommend some of your favorite movies, TV shows, and documentaries streaming on Netflix that would help me expand my pop culture diet - especially if they are directed by/acted by/about women, people of color, and people outside the upper middle class New York/LA milieu.
Name this made-for-TV movie: Two kids steal a bus...

TV/Movie Identification
I have a vague memory of a character in a TV show or movie trying to guess a password that he forgot. The only hint he has is that the password is "something I like". The answer was something simple and stupid, like "candy". I can't remember where I saw this and it's going to drive me nuts. [more inside]
Help us remember what show/movie this scene was in
Recently we watched a TV show or movie with this scene. A man realizes his hand is not shaking. He's with another person who's hand is shaking after some stressful/traumatic event. The context leads you to believe he's finally realizing he can deal with the stuff. We saw this within the last few months but can't remember what it was from. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Identify a movie where kids are inside the TV
I have a vague memory of a single bit of a movie I saw in the early 90s (don't know how old the movie was tho). Three kids, on the lip of a giant TV screen. The sky was orange/yellow/green stormy. The movie villain was threatening them, and they either pushed him into TV land, or they themselves jumped into it to escape him. Any guesses?
Help identifying a traumatizingly scary movie/TV show scene

The Cinematic Sales Pitch - I need the expertise of movie and tv buffs..
I'm looking to watch clips of sales pitches that appeared in movies or television - anything over the past 50-60 years but the more recent the show or movie would be better. Think of something like a scene in Mad Men where Don Draper absolutely nails the sales pitch to the client. [more inside]

The land before infomercials...
It is the late eighties or early nineties and you are watching a late night movie on UHF. It features a "wanderer" type person with big religious/philosophical ideas, set in the modern US, and loopily incoherent/incompetent. Is this a trope, what are the examples? What are examples of seminal bad late night movies which aren't scifi/horror?
Don't take it personally, babe, it just ain't your story

Meme of tv or movie characters driving someone out to a remote location
How many instances in television and film can the hive mind come up with that involve a character driving someone out to the desert (or some other remote location) to kill them, often having the victim (who is usually someone who has wronged the character, or can't be convicted in a court of law), dig a hole, only ending up unable to actually murder them?
