Can anyone help ID this dimly recollected movie clip?

Hopefully this isn't too vague: in the late 80's/early 90's my dad taped Star Wars off've Canadian cable TV for us. At one point during the tape he switched channels by mistake and we saw a really creepy clip from a movie or TV show that's stuck with me for literally decades. If anyone has any ideas what it could be based on my recollection I'd be very grateful. Details inside... [more inside]

Where to start reading The Peripheral if you've seen the TV series?

I enjoyed the (sadly cancelled) Peripheral streaming series. I've read and enjoyed some of Gibson's other books, but I haven't read The Peripheral or The Agency. Since the series was cancelled I'd like to finish the story. Is there a solid spot in the book to pick up where the first/only season left off, or does it diverge enough from the book that I might as well start from the beginning? [more inside]

Netflix suggestions based on a short list of weird-fiction-ish shows?

All the shows I've recently liked are in a similar vein, with supernatural or science-fictiony goings-on, a bit of humor, and as little actual horror as possible. List below the fold. [more inside]

Tracking down a scifi show from the early days of crowdfunding

The plot as I recall revolves around a satellite/probe crashing into a modern-day (early 2000s) remote area (in Canada?). Turns out there are Russian people inside, and the only way that could be the case is if the USSR somehow had a secret base on the Moon for at least a generation. There was a self-run (i.e. before Kickstarter &c even existed) crowdfund campaign for it. My brain refuses to give me any title for it other than "Capricorn One", which is definitely not correct. The Orville - worth watching, or annoyingly sexist?

I like Star Trek (especially TNG and DS9). I'm considering watching The Orville. I've seen varying reports of how much sexist garbage it has. Will I hate it? [more inside]

SF/Fantasy Movie/Show ID

Posted for a family member: I'm going crazy trying to remember what show or movie I saw a certain plot thread in. Probably fantasy or SF or pseudo-historical, involving an exotic, backward culture with a superstition that twin births were a form of defect in which a single person was born with two bodies, so that a pair of identical twins was raised as a single individual, and natives had a taboo against acknowledging that there was more than one person present, got confused when outsiders asked for the second twin's name, etc. [more inside]

Looking for COMPLETED awesome sci-fi TV shows

Been annoyed by a couple shows we got into (Firefly, Dark Matter) that got cancelled with no plot resolution. Can you recommend either shows that got to complete their story arc, or that are episodic enough that completion is a non-issue? More preferences inside. [more inside]

90s sci fi/horror for $200, Alex.

What to Watch Next? Yarn Store Edition

At our yarn shop, we host a weekly nerd night where we watch a couple of TV episodes and knit or crochet. Star Trek (especially TNG and now Disco) has been a popular favorite, as has Doctor Who and Stranger Things. We did Firefly a couple years ago, and we've done some Miyazaki movies in between. The plan was to get people hooked on the Expanse, but it looks like we may need a plan B. We knew the Expanse was dark and complicated, and if we can't get people into it, we need another option. Ironbutt Star Trek: TOS

I want help putting together a curated list of 10 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, to show in an all-day marathon. 10 episodes is about 8.5 hours; add in some snack breaks and lunch, and maybe a late dinner after, and that's a solid day on the couch. I AM LIKE UNTO A GOD (of teevee)

I just got a one-week Nielsen TV diary in the mail for November 5-12 -- including a crisp $1 bill to help grease the wheels. Yay! Unfortunately most of the shows I watch regularly, like Silicon Valley, Louie, Key & Peele, and Rick and Morty are on hiatus (or over) right now. I'm already planning to catch Last Week Tonight and Colbert's Late Show, but what other worthy television (that doesn't require a lot of prior familiarity) should I give my coveted (if minuscule) 18-34 ratings boost to? Best less-scary X-Files episodes?

My wife (and I) would like to catch up on the X-Files. However, she doesn't really like things that are too scary. However! One of her favorite shows of all time is Fringe, which had its own fair share of scary moments. Fringe never really scared her too much. So, with that in mind...what are the best X-Files episodes which won't give her nightmares?

Entertain Me!

I know everybody asks this (and I've read through the previous questions looking for recommendations), but what should I watch next? Preferably on Netflix or Hulu Plus (not web only). In general, I tend to like: mysteries/crime procedurals/law dramas, especially with a quirky twist, and also shows involving a quirky band of misfits (or individual) working outside the law to bring justice to the little people while finding out who done them wrong (e.g. the A-Team, Burn Notice, The Pretender, etc.) I also like heist shows and sci-fi. And occasionally anime. [more inside]

Animated TV for Grownups

I was trying to find a good animated TV show/miniseries to watch, and got to wondering why there are virtually no non-japanese non-kids/comedy animated series to be found? I'm sick of "anime" - does anyone have any ideas as to why Japan has cornered this market so completely, or better yet know of any non-japanese shows/series for me to check out? I'm into scifi and adventure stuff.
