The tagline should be: Yell at the TV and Not at Each Other!

This weekend I played one of the Jackbox family of games. I think my family would love them and I'd like to give/have it available to play while we're all home for Christmas. Looks like I might have some technical issues--I need some guidance, please! [more inside]

Help me fix an intermittent monitor fault

My husband and I bought two monitors a little over 12 months ago. They worked just fine for 6 months when his developed an intermittent fault. Essentially, the screen abruptly goes static-y and weird, and horrible noise comes out the speakers - I guess it should be described as interference. None of the controls work and it has to be powered down and back on again. Two months after his started going wrong, mine did too - exactly the same way. [more inside]

How do I connect PC/TV/Surround sound so they all play nice together?

A year ago, I bought a new TV with HDMI capability and hooked it up to my PC to work as a monitor (with a straight HDMI cable connection). IT. IS. AWESOME. I just moved into a new place with more room and now want to connect my surround sound system (5 speakers) to this setup as well. This is the receiver I'm considering purchasing and from what I can tell, will do what I need. Extra potentially pertinent info:
  • PC has two HDMI ports (one on the video card)
  • Nintendo Wii connected directly to TV via RCA cables
  • BluRay player connected to TV via HDMI cable
I want my setup to allow me to use the surround sound at all times (when watching broadcast TV, when using the TV as the PC monitor, when using the BluRay player and when using the Wii (this is the least important)). I'm assuming the TV will connect to the receiver (via HDMI) and the PC will also connect to the receiver (via HDMI) and all other hook-ups will remain as-is. Thanks in advance for any advice or tips on how to make this easy! This will be my dream setup so I'm excited to get it right.

Video card recommendations

I have an older Gateway PC acting as my media center/file server. I have it hooked up to a 42" 720p Samsung Plasma TV via VGA from the on-board connection on the PC. As such, the resolution is not very good: 1024x768 and the picture doesn't really fit on the screen. Can you recommend a cheap video card (under $50) that will let me connect via HDMI and show things at a decent resolution without stretching or cropping the picture? No gaming, just playing video files.

PC: TV. TV: PC.

I'd like to connect an older PC to my TV, just to watch online videos through the TV, not do any detailed PC work or reading. Preferably without buying a new video card for the PC. I thought it would be simple, but the more I read, the more confused I get. The short version is: what's the simplest way to connect a PC with this video card to this TV. The slight longer version is: [more inside]

Multiple channels of TV on one screen?

How can I get four different television channels playing on a large plasma or LCD display at once? I'm guessing that cable inputs would need to go to a PC, and then piped to the TV through DVI, but beyond that (hardware, software) I am a little stumped. Anyone have any suggestions?

Advice wanted on TV video server.

I have an old Intel Celeron 501MHz PC sitting around collecting dust. I'm wondering whether it would be suitable as a video server for my television, assuming I upgrade it with WiFi and a TV card. I don't have/want cable, so I don't necessarily need TiVo-like capabilities, but it would be nice to have something that could access my WiFi network, grab my downloads (mostly fansubbed anime, foriegn shows, etc.), and play them on the home theatre system. Is it worthwhile to use such a system for this purpose? Is there a more elegant solution that I'm overlooking that doesn't involve burning a ton of DVDs?
