"You're so Cute" as an Insult

Every so often I'll do or say something that someone views as ignorant or not done well, and they will say "Aw, you're so cute". This has happened multiple times with different people. I don't know how to respond other than feeling annoyed. It feels like I'm being belittled, and that they know it has feminine connotation when they use it as an insult. (I have been called cute in kinder ways, but that term still bothers me for some reason.) Did they mean it as an insult, or is there a better way to look at it? [more inside]
