Roommate moving sooner than expected and it feels...not nice

I live with a roommate - I'm on the lease, he's not. When he moved in, landlord required him to sign away his right to stay in the apartment should I move out. Well, I'm moving out! I promised I'd give him ample notice if I were ever to leave, and I did. I'm moving out on Dec 30th and told him on Nov 14th. He was cool with it, appreciative of the notice, said he was fine with moving after Christmas. I offered to help, be a reference, etc. Today he told me he's found a new place and will move out on Dec 8th, sticking me with the lion's share of the rent for next month. [more inside]

Security Refund, roommate did not give adequate notice

I'm in NYC. Our written agreement requires a minimum of 30 days notice if he is going to leave (also 30 days if I want him out). Wednesday he told me he is leaving today (Friday), and probably won't be back, but may want to come back in 2 weeks if his new job does not work out (he is on vacation from current one). Served a deadbeat and hostile roommate with eviction notice. Now what?

Posted on behalf of a friend, who lives in Florida: Me (Master Tenant) and 2 others (Co-Tenants) lease a house from a property management company. We have permission & authorization to sub-lease. I had to give proper notice for eviction due to failure to pay rent today. If he doesn't vacate, and I have to take him to court... do I have any reasonable expectation to actually collect un-paid rent and legal fees? [more inside]

The Curious Case of the Angry Non-Tenant

Roommate has sudden medical issues, how to cope financially/emotionally?

Asking this on behalf of a close friend: "What do I do when a person I do not want to be close to is dying, or believes they are dying, in close quarters?" Her roommate has diabetes and has developed significant kidney issues, and is very upset and scared. Complicating factors: my friend expects that the roommate will be unable to pay his share of rent and bills, and she does not have the means to cover them on her own. Also, she has very sound reasons for not being emotionally close to him.

Why does this potentially awesome move make me uncomfortable?

Looking for an apartment, found a possibility with an interesting guy I met a couple of months ago. The neighbourhood is great, the apartment is gorgeous. I get along well with him and I will expand my social circle living with him, so that's a nice plus as well. However... my guts say no. And I can't pinpoint a reason. [more inside]

How do you find a sane and compatible housemate from Craigslist?

I've been offered first dibs on renting a super nice house. Unfortunately I need to find at least 1 and ideally 2 people to rent it with me. Just asking around my network if they know anyone hasn't worked out. I'm pretty sure Craigslist is the next best option...what should put in my post, and ask potential people in person, to weed out the crazies? [more inside]

Bimonthly San Francisco apartment question: Student Edition

Please help a new grad move to San Francisco. I will probably arrive on June 1 and start working June 10, and I have $1500 for the whole move in process. Where do I stay while I'm apartment hunting? How would you split the rent?

Asking for a friend: I am considering moving into a two bedroom apartment with a couple. I would have one room (the smaller one), and they would occupy the master bedroom. Their room is very large -- close to twice the size of mine. What would be an equitable split of the rent? All utilities are included in the rent.

Roommate he-said she-said results in us being short a quarter of the rent. Help!
