True Beginner Resources for PHP

This question is for my 18 year old son. He is building and managing a website using Lorekeeper, based on the Laravel PHP framework. He has outgrown the edits he can make using the editing tools and wants to work with the PHP directly, but is having trouble finding PHP learning resources for a true programming novice - most courses, tutorials or articles assume some programming experience in another language. He does know HTML/CSS and is generally very tech-savvy, but not any object-oriented programming languages. [more inside]

WordPress, or roll-my-own cms?

I have a bunch of friends and acquaintances in a particular career for whom operating WordPress as a user is just too overwhelming and complicated. Also, none of the themes or plugins I'm finding are actually geared to meet their industry's information presentation requirements. So do I learn WordPress theme and plugin development so I can wrestle it around to be what they need, or do I create my own lightweight CMS that does what they need while minimizing and simplifying the user backend? How can a schlump like me learn PHP in the shortest possible time?

I didn't ask for this! My employer is moving me to a position that will require a working knowledge of PHP development, but my skills are nowhere near up to snuff. "You learn quick, just pick it up" they say! I don't know where they got the idea that I DO in fact learn quickly, but I guess now I have to! So what can a guy like me do to pick up at least a passable proficiency relatively quickly? I can put in the hours, but I would rather put in the hours efficiently, if you know what I mean.

Wordpress Workflow

I'm designing a custom Wordpress theme as part of a project. In addition to the typical Wordpress install, there's also going to be a social media plug-in on top of it (which has already been picked out and installed by another member of the project). Tips for building some sort of blogging application from scratch

I'm well and truly sick of hand-coding my website, and so it's about time I got myself some sort of blogging application. Because I'm a contrary type, though, I'd quite like to have a go at building it myself. What do you think - is there any point at all in my trying this? If there is, should I do it using PHP to edit an RSS file? And what features would you include if you were starting from scratch?
