Sleeping Upright
I messed up my left shoulder and neck on Thursday and the only way I can get everything from totally locking up and leaving me frozen in pain is staying active. I gotta get sleep, though, and I can't figure out how to do that because even sitting is dangerous. What now?? 😩
I hurt my knee. What to do I do now so that tomorrow I can walk?
I was stepping into the shower and I slipped. I hurt my knee. Twisted it or something. It initially hurt so much I couldn't breath. Now I can breathe and I can even walk on it with pain, but my sense is that this will get worse, instead of better overnight and tomorrow I will wake up significantly disabled. How do I prevent this? Young adult book about a family that can absorb other people's pain
I am trying to recall a young adult fiction book I read in the late 1970s or early 1980s. It was probably written in the 1970s or 1960s.
It was about a family who could experience and maybe absorb the pain and sickness of other people making them get better again. I have a vague memory of the setting maybe having been seaside or an island or near some kind of water.
The only other thing I remember was reference to the youngest child experiencing intense suffering when another child in town suffered an injury.

Meniscuses. Menisces? Meniscii?! (not a grammar Q, I kneed help)
Two months ago nagging pain and stiffness developed into real pain and hard time rising, sitting, going downstairs etc. My bodywork person said they were worried about my meniscus. Physio and doctor etc were thinking no trauma, no meniscal problem, but MRI confirms damage to outer meniscus and some ACL involvement. Fucksticks. [more inside]

Is there any way to shorten the recovery period for sudden neck pain?
Do you ever turn your head while awake or asleep and feel a muscle in your neck do something weird, which results in not being able to turn your head normally and without pain for several days? That happened to me this morning and today has been a complete waste. [more inside]
Tell me about your car's seat.
I've got an injury that makes it painful to sit in most modern cars. I'm thinking there are probably cars out there that have been designed with the intent for the driver to sit in an upright as opposed to a semi-reclined position, and that might be comfortable for someone 5' 3". I'd like to try driving some, either for inspiration for how to modify my current seats or for a possible future car. Have you driven such a vehicle? Which cars should I be looking at? [more inside]
How to be sensitive about medical issues, while keeping my own sanity?
I have a family member who is often sick or injured. While the illnesses and injuries are nothing gravely serious, bad luck seems to befall them more often than most. They are also very dramatic about their pain and prognosis. I don't want to be insensitive or unsympathetic. But I am about to lose it. I need help figuring out how to manage my own frustration if there is no way to gently let this person know that they are being a diva. [more inside]
Pain in foot, why?
Over the past year I've developed a recurring pain in my left foot's big toe joint. It would appear for a few weeks, heal, and return several months later at regular intervals. I do rock climb and hike, but this does not seem to correlate with the pain. My other foot is normal. [more inside]
How can I relieve RSI wrist pain when using a computer?
I've had RSI related pain in my right wrist (right side) now for over a year that's showed no sign of improvement. My work is all computer based (admin) and the software we used isn't very shortcut friendly, so I'm using the mouse all day. I've had to give up playing guitar (my favourite hobby) because it causes me too much pain to play. The pain is constant from the moment I wake up (around a 2-3) then gets worse throughout the day (up to about a 5) when I use my wrists. I'd love to take some time off to rest my wrist but I literally use it for everything. [more inside]

Elbow injury... advice and healing procedure suggestions please
I injured my elbow or forearm while bouldering (climbing at relatively short heights without a rope). I have never had an elbow or arm injury and need some advice on a) what I may have done and b) how to manage it while it heals. Main points: I have gone to a doctor, x-rays were taken, as expected the arm is not broken, nothing further was done at the doc's office. I think it was a purely rotational injury, not compressional. Plenty more details under the cut. [more inside]
What is this weird foot pain?
Three or four weeks ago I fell at work...and then days later, fell down some steps at home. I know, I'm coordinated like that. Ever since the falls I've had pain that goes across the top of my foot. It's been a while now and the pain isn't getting better...but it's not getting worse either. What could it be? [more inside]

What can I do to feel better after I jolted my body in a fall?
I fell on the back of my head yesterday while playing kickball. I did the right thing and went to the ER, and got the all-clear: no concussion. I felt fine but headachey last night. Today I feel quite bad, and I'm not sure what I should be doing. Sporty-people, help? [more inside]
Is there a healing power in the sun?
I live in northern New York where we have short hot summers of about 2 to 3 months and long cold winters. I have a variety of health problems, including joint problems, and hormone problems including low testosterone and higher than normal estrogen (I am a male) . I have noticed that in the summertime If I sit outside for one to two hours every day to absorb the sun I feel healthier, my joints hurt less, my hormones seem better, and I have more energy. Also if I have a cut or a twisted ankle It seems to heal faster then in the winter.
Assuming that it was the vitamin D from the sun that was causing this , I took vitamin D pills every day in the winter. However, I did not experience any of the benefits that I experienced with regular sunshine exposure.
This leads me to believe there is something else, some sort of other healing power in the sun that either science is not aware of yet or that I am simply not aware of. Is this possible?

Yesterday I started having sudden sharp pain and stiffness in my left knee, above and around the kneecap. I suspect I injured it doing squats and lunges (with bad form) the night before. Could it get better on its own, if I rest for a few days? Or should I see a doctor (and what kind)? [more inside]
Soreness in outside of lower leg during squats
I am getting soreness/discomfort in a strange place while doing squats: on the outside of my right leg only, 4-6 inches above my ankle. I'm returning to weightlifting after a year off with unrelated shoulder injury, and this happens with very little additional weight beyond just the bar. Should I be stretching, starting with less weight, or something else?

Help with my lower back pain issue
Intense lower back pain on the left side. It's also painful down the side of my left leg. After being stiff and mostly inactive this winter I was doing some deep knee beds and intense hamstring stretches, now I'm in a huge amount of pain. My health insurance has a hefty deductible and am hoping to avoid the doctor's office. Any ideas on what to do to relieve the pain?
