What's the display device I'm looking for?

I want to make a dedicated little always-on display that simply shows the time remaining to 7am every day. Ideally it comes in an enclosure which can sit upright on my desk and be charged/powered by USB from my computer. Is there some sort of programmable hobbyist display that can do this? Hooking an Arduino up to a LCD and mounting them inside a box feels like over-engineering. Any suggestions welcome.

Low end LCD monitors like 90s ones?

Are there LCD monitors for sale that use old technology from the 90s? TFT laptop displays had narrow viewing angles and 100ms refresh rates. STN displays weren’t even color but they were sunlight viewable. And everything was low resolution. Fun! Can I buy one to connect to my computer? Just plug in an HDMI cable and go?

A teeny tiny LED light for my un-lit screen?

So I just bought a new oven/microwave combo, and so far it's great. But one little detail I didn't think about nor did I notice when I bought it: the LCD screen is not backlit, so it's a little hard to see. How can I illuminate the screen so it's easier to see? [more inside]

I want a screen that hangs on my wall and shows my phone notifications.

I want to spend less time looking at my phone. I think it would help if my phone behaved more like an old-fashioned wall-mounted phone. To this end, I want a screen that is mounted on my wall and displays incoming phone notifications. [more inside]

Vizio Smart TV showing signs of burn-in on screen. Time for new TV?

3 year old Vizio 50" smart TV has burn in, mostly on right side of screen. Not always but some times. One game of Freecell showed up, faintly, for a week, as have other windows that'd been left open. Currently the Freecell image is *almost* gone but that's happened before with other things, come and go. [more inside]

Projector help...

I'm looking to buy a used projector for showing my children a Christmas slideshow of the year that has just passed. I'd also like to be able to show movies on it now and then. I'm not that bothered about it being the most up to date tech even last year - we have a Macbook Pro from 2013 so I doubt the 'source' can even send a particularly high definition image to the projector. I love love electronic music- and I drive alone a lot...

Got into Daft Punk in the 90's, Deadmau5, and Justice: now I love cruising to LCD Soundsystem. I don't care how far back you go, driving drums and hypnotic choruses are my jam... Can you make album/ artist suggestions to scratch that itch? even The Strokes does it for me sometime. My case in point? The soundtrack to Tron - Legacy. Think hypnotic driving soundtrack. Thanks! Advertising screen vs cheap TFT monitor - what's the difference?

I'm looking to buy a monitor for our business that I can use to display adverts/information on. Either fed from a server or loaded onto a SD card. Does anyone know the difference between a cheap used 22" TFT from eBay which I can use with an old Mac Mini and a proper "advertising screen" with a built in computer which can costs hundreds of pounds? Thanks a lot for your insights.

LCD TV is unhappy

My Samsung LA37B530 has developed a pale cast to the image as though the brightness was set too high, and the smoothing of some colours is also not up to sniff. Basically, it no longer looks like proper HDTV. In the event that it was inadvertently adjusted, I reset it to standard factory settings. The problem persists. Any bright ideas? Thanks!

Why does my car stereo display text differently in day and night modes?

I admit up front this is an odd question, and it won't kill me if I never get an authoritative answer, but it's been bugging me. My car's stereo has an LCD display that gives the artist's name in fairly large letters and the track title below that in smaller letters. It can only display so many letters of course, and so it has to truncate most names and titles. But it truncates text differently in its daytime and nighttime modes. Why does it do that? How to go from zero to TV?

We haven't had a proper TV in over a decade. I would like to have something other than my laptop to watch streaming media, DVDs, Netflix, etc. Can you explain how this works in 2013? I imagine we'd buy something like this Samsung LED HDTV and some kind of speakers. Then what? Do we plug it into a laptop? What exactly is Apple TV and how does it stack up against Roku? This seems like it should be a simple question, but I feel like a caveman emerging from the dark, and am fairly bewildered at all of the options and variations out there. [more inside]

What kind of computer or tv monitor is this?

I need to rephotograph some stuff off a computer monitor and I love the texture of the screens in this clip from Moneyball, especially in the extreme close ups and player head shots. The visible honeycomb of pixels is what I'm interested in. I've shot stuff off a Cinema Display (no visible pixels really) and broadcast monitor (visible but rectangular) before and it doesn't look like this. Any idea what kind of monitor or LCD looks like this?

About a month ago, I spilled some water on my laptop. So I let everything dry out. It works again, but now the screen is very bright, as if the contrast is turned way up. One Home Entertainment System to Rule Them All

I would like to buy a home entertainment system. I would like to listen to music, watch television, movies, and play videogames. I would like to have Netflix. I would like to stream media from my network or the cloud. I want great sound but I am not an audiophile, although I am not averse to spending a lot on speakers. I do not want to spend more than 8 hours doing research. I will spend up to $2500-$3000. How do I attack this problem? Can you recommend specific TV's, receivers, speakers, or stuff like a Roku box? Can you recommend sites that provide easy to understand, objective reviews of equipment like TelevisionInfo? I do not want to hit the forums if I don't have to. Can you recommend specific configurations of equipment or point me to sites that supply this information. I feel like if I don't get pointed in the right direction, I am going to over analyze this and spend far too much time that I don't have. I just want a rocking home entertainment solution for my family that I won't want to upgrade a week later.
