Remote support for family stuck in Charlotte

My wife and our two kids (aged 11 and 7) have been in North Carolina for the past few days, and were scheduled to fly back this afternoon. Hurricane Debby had other plans, and their flight was just cancelled. They're rebooked for tomorrow evening, and have a hotel room reserved in downtown Charlotte, but their luggage is missing, and at this point I'd say it's a 50-50 shot the rebooked plane takes off. Tomorrow is also my wife's birthday. [more inside]

Toddler friendly dishes with shredded chicken

Hosting a handful of international toddlers for lunch. None have dietary restrictions except for, well, the preferences of being a toddler. I have boiled a whole chicken and will shred it. Enchiladas would be too unfamiliar for the guests, so I'm thinking a pasta or rice based dish, but this is not my kind of cooking. Ideas?

Should I teach my kids slurs so they recognize them?

Yesterday in a chat, my 11-year old was dealing with a troll who filled about 30 screens with an anti-LGBT slur. My son said he didn't know what it meant and so was more annoyed at the spamming behavior than the hate speech. We've always discussed slurs as they come up, but now I'm wondering if he would be better equipped to flag and report that kind of language if he recognized the words. [more inside]

Help our cat-loving family find our feline!

Our 8yo has a cat allergy, originally detected by a bunch of sneezing and confirmed by a blood test. Our family REALLY wants a cat. We have found a Siberian cat breeder with 8-month-old kittens available. Siberian cats are known to have lower levels of allergens, but each cat has a different level. You can get each cat tested, but it's expensive and unreliable. We are meeting with the breeder and several of her cats this weekend. How can we maximize our chances of choosing a cat that our kid doesn't react to? [more inside]

Linux music software for kids

Hi all, my 11yo kid is learning the piano and enjoys noodling, maybe more than learning classical pieces. He also loves any music with strong rhythm. What would be some good software for him to create music? It should be on Linux (Ubuntu-based) and ideally would be easy for beginners. He plays on a Kawai CA79 electric piano which has midi capabilities so any software which could use this (and any advice on how to set this up, including necessary hardware) is very welcome. Thanks!

Adulting : Travel with Kids edition

Beloved family members recently visited - Adults are about 10 years younger than me, with 3 kids. Their travel sucked (the visit itself was great) but in talking to the trip-planner about it, he eventually said "Yeah, in hindsight, we saved some money by getting the cheapest flights and rental car, but really came out way behind". Any tips on how to do this better? [more inside]

Please help me figure out which edition of a library book I read

I am looking for either the publisher or illustrator of a book I read in 1978/79 from my elementary school's library (very small town in Southwestern Ontario). vacation for a sociable 5 year old and her anti-social parents

Thinking about travelling in 2023 with our daughter who will be 5. We've really only gone to visit family or friends, or vacationed with family, and i know that it won't feel like much of a vacation unless we have someone else there to help out with her. I have been looking at previous questions and i love the idea of a kids club. It does seem like a lot of the places with all day kids clubs are beachy. Covid safe socializing during winter for kids

Doggo with a grudge

We adopted a dog a few months ago. He's awesome. Good natured, energetic, and sweet. He's always been good with kids, our son and others. But on Friday a few kids came over for a water gun fight (socially distanced fun! try it!) and the visiting kids were aggressive with spraying him. Since then, he has taken to being standoffish around kids, even ours occasionally. He sometimes growls now (softly, but still) at kids who reach to pet him (when he used to love attention from kids of all ages.) How do we get him to trust kiddos again? [more inside]

Choose your own location: COVID Edition
