What have you learnt through computer games?
I'm doing some thinking about games as education tools, and I am wondering if you have ever found yourself with a skill (or knowledge, but ideally a skill) that you've acquired from a simulation or from playing a game.
What are some good edutainment games/apps for grade schoolers?
I'd love to find some ipad games/apps for my kids (2nd grade and K) that have genuine educational value but are more fun than, say, Khan Academy. I know this is very subjective and debatable, but I guess I'm thinking of stuff like what I used to play as a kid - arcade-style games that involve solving math problems, or fun trivia games, things like that. I know apps like Minecraft and Tynker are often used in classrooms but I'm thinking more in terms of the "traditional" school subjects. Thanks!

How to convert "I have/who has" game to digital?
Ok nerds, help me out! In the past I've played a very large flashcard game with my classes (in person) regarding rhetorical strategies and definitions and examples. The game plays in that I randomly distribute the 70+ cards to my students, we start with one student reading a definition from a card, and the students have to figure out the word that matches the definition. I often have the opportunity to talk about sexism, gender issues, racism and other forms of oppression with groups of high school students while working as an outdoor educator. So cool! Help me create a fake field of scientific inquiry!
As I mentioned in a previous AskMe I am a professor who has been developing a long-running, semi-realistic simulation inspired by ARGs in which the players will be challenged to make many business decisions over the course of several months in an evolving scenario. Without going into too much detail, the premise is that the students have been hired by a genius inventor who has created an exciting breakthrough technology and is interested in commercializing it. The name for the technology turns up nothing in Google (because it is fake!), but we want to make it look like a real thing. Help me figure out how! [more inside]

Gamer teen to coder
A friends teenage (16) son is considering skipping university and instead training themselves to be a programmer, with a particular interest in making games. Assuming he's starting from scratch what would be some good cheap or free resources to get him started? How do I calculate the probability of a specific sum of repeated die rolls?

Best games for Leappad?
My 5 (near 6) year old daughter is in love with her Leap Frog Leapad, which she got for Easter. She especially loves the photo features and pet that comes with it, as well as a Tinkerbell book and Dora game. She's wondering if she can have another game though - which we'd happily get her, but as they are rather expensive we'd like to get a good one that's worth it. I'm interested in how effective edutainment (specifically using games for learning) is, and especially interested in critical articles or books about edutainment as an industry. Much of the stuff that I read is very positive about educational gaming, but I have a gut feeling that there has to be a negative perspective as well.
