Stuff to do in Hackney/Dalston, London UK—first in a series: FOOD?

Hello there! I am going to be visiting London for a week at the end of October, and staying in Hackney Central, while walking to Dalston daily. I'll be posting more questions over the next couple of weeks about other stuff to do while I'm there—but with this question, I would like to focus on recommendations for local eateries and food shopping. See inside for special snowflake stuff. Thanks! [more inside]

Eating in Europe - celiac filter

I'm going to be traveling through a few Western European cities this summer, need to eat while doing so, and have celiac disease. I'm quite sensitive and a little cross-contamination will ensure that all I see of Amsterdam is a hotel toilet. I'd like to eat at restaurants and also eat pre-purchased food (cheese, crackers, fruit, salami, etc.) in parks and on trains between cities. I'm looking for your celiac-safe restaurant and grocery recommendations. [more inside]

Good Friday, Easter lunch in Spanish household, London UK - gift ideas?

This is a lunch tomorrow, Good Friday, in a Spanish household in London. An early Easter celebration for them due to family commitments and travel limitations. I have been asked to bring a bottle of wine, but what gift(s) could I also bring that would be appropriate, relevant and appreciated?

I want to be green and fuzzy in London

London casserole service?

I have a friend in London who's just lost her sister to cancer. The sister has young kids, and so does my friend. Maybe its a southern US thing, but I always think of bringing food at times like this. Since I'm on the wrong continent, I'm having trouble figuring out how to make it work. I know London is huge - she's near the Crystal Palace Station. Any recommendations for food delivery services, or anything else that might be helpful? Right now I'm feeling helpless and far away.

Even starving academics (in Highgate) need to eat

Tomorrow, I'm off to the UK to sit in the British Library and read bad religious novels by authors you've never heard of! But when I'm not doing that, I may need to eat occasionally, lest the lack of nutrition make me fall asleep over triple-deckers by Mme. de Genlis. I'm staying in the Highgate area, relatively close to the cemetery. Any recommendations for good but not luxurious fare? Most cuisines are fine (Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc.).

Indian restaurant London (near doctor who shop)

A few years ago I was in London and I was at the doctor who shop and happened upon an amazing Indian restaurant a couple of blocks away. It was on 2 floors and as I recall family owned and according to the menu been there for a long time. I will be returning to London and want to go back to the restaurant, anyone know what it was? And the address? Thanx in advance.

But they know so much about Wine and Chocolates!

In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days. Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury

Vegetarian food near the Roundhouse

I'm going to a gig tonight at the Roundhouse in London with some friends. We'd like to go somewhere to get some food beforehand and I'm wondering if any users here have any suggestions. Most of us are vegetarian and none of us have much money so ideally we'd want a cheap and cheerful little café or something. Anywhere within walking distance of the venue would be great. Thanks!

Recommend quirky places to visit or places to eat/drink between London and Snowdonia...?

I'm taking a journey by car from London (England) to Portmeirion (North Wales) and back a day later. The quickest route appears to be M1-M6-M54-A5 and then eastwards through Snowdonia and a variety of smaller roads. Along this route, say anywhere after Northampton, are there any lovely/eccentric places to stop either for some brief sightseeing or for a bite to eat and something to drink? [more inside]
