Trends in YA and Middle Grade publishing

Some years ago I read an article about the history of the YA novel which posited that YA is a marketing term. (Example: The Outsiders probably would have been marketed as a YA novel today but the category didn’t exist then). I’m looking for historical information about YA and middle grade novels. What are 10-15 books to read to make it seem like you went to college?

Met a girl who got out of an abusive relationship and is starting over. Had a kid early. Bad parents. The whole deal. Yet somehow she has the poise and personality of someone who's educated...even if she isn't. Is very self conscious of the fact. I said she can fake it if she just reads enough and retains it. So what should be on that reading list today?

Classroom Reading Tracking/Book Sharing Software

I'm doing a lot of extensive reading this year, and asking my students (near-native English speaking Japanese 7-10th graders with overseas or international school experience) to read several books this year. I would like to have some way to a) track books students are reading, and b) have a community page of some sort where students can share the books they've read, and their responses to them. Does literature traumatize children?

I'm a high school English teacher. We have an ongoing debate in my school between the English department and the guidance counselors. English teachers want to teach literature that deals with difficult topics, whether that be tragic plays or texts about racism. Guidance wants us to avoid literature that might upset students, many of whom have experienced a great deal of trauma. I'm interested in RESEARCH on either side of this question. Is there a way to teach this kind of literature that won't upset students? Is it better to keep to texts that have no difficult topics? I know that a lot of folks will have strong opinions about this on one side or the other, which is why I'd rather read actual studies, or at least scholarly articles. Thanks!

How to find common literary ground: Dostoevsky vs Rick Riordan

Without a bunch of unnecessary back story, I used to be an avid reader, read many of the classics, but these days I tend to only enjoy teen drama/sci fi with quick pacing like Hunger Games, the Magicians, Percy Jackson, etc. I always preferred more contemporary stuff as soon as I was far enough in college to specialize (e.g. Thomas Pynchon over Austen), but now I feel like my taste is not on par with my education, and mostly I don't care about that because I like what I like, but part of me does care, and I wonder about trying to get back to some more literary/learned media. I say "media" because ideally I'd like to expand my tastes for tv shows and movies also. [more inside]

Engaging a kid who loves Gravity Falls, Ancient Egypt, and mysteries

My 8-year old son is wild for Gravity Falls, and is very into things that have a similar vibe: Ancient Egypt, Mesoamerican cultures, secret codes, mysterious secrets, hidden rooms, cryptids, conspiracy theories, myths, black holes, space-time. I am homeschooling him due to COVID-19, and the key to keeping him engaged is to make use of his interests. What fiction and non-fiction books, tv or movies, video games, subjects of interest, historical events, etc. would a Gravity Falls-loving kid be interested in? [more inside]

Student reading way too challenging books - why is this a bad idea?

I'm a native English speaking ESL tutor in Taiwan. I've recently been hired to teach a 5.5 year old (social studies and reading.) His parents are insisting that he read from books aimed at 9-12 year old native speakers. This kid is bright, but his reading comprehension is nowhere near a native speaking kid 5 years older than him. I don't have any formal training in teaching young kids and only about a year of job experience but this seems like a terrible idea. What are arguments I can use to convince the parents to give him material that is more in line with his abilities? [more inside]

For a classroom exercise, I need a couple of mid-length (2-6 pages), somewhat provocative editorial-style essays. Where to find free non-literary book summaries?

This summer I have a lot of reading to do: some books about physics and math applied to sports, others about evidence-based sport conditioning, objectivism, ... stuff that built up because I didn't had to read it. When I read books I like to have a top down view of the subject but most books' introduction fail to do so, either because it is too short and not enough to give a good overview of each chapter or because they not even try to summarise the contents of the books and on how to use the book.
