So my kid wants to be…a politician?
Kid is a high school senior, about to start at a highly selective college, considering majors in political science and/or economics. When asked where he sees himself in the future, he says that he's very into national-level (left to far-left) politics, and is considering becoming a politician. This is a world I know zero about, and I can offer him exactly no guidance. What do you tell a kid like that? What should he study? What should he know and/or do now, as he prepares to start college?

Civic Education Recommendations
I realized recently that there is a ton that I do not know about the workings of our government & country. This was most recently on display during the 2017 tax bill fiasco, attempting to figure out what the hell was going on, or what the next steps would be after the Senate approved something at 2am.
While I wish I had paid more attention in high school, those days are long gone. Does anyone have a recommendation for a textbook or even online course that would provide an in-depth understanding of how things work? [more inside]
College Student in my class with MAGA hat
College professor here, at a majority-minority state school.
Recently one of my students came to class with a Make America Great Again red baseball cap. It was during an exam so I only saw it and him briefly and had no practical way to react or comment (even if I had wanted to). [more inside]

Information to Send my Mother about the Dangers of a Trump Presidency
I would like to put together an email to my mother explaining why I’m so afraid of a Trump presidency and the people it will empower both inside and outside of the White House. I would be grateful for any suggestions you can provide about information to include, especially with sources, particularly anything that makes clear the authoritarian/fascist aspects of current events. I’m not looking to make her read long articles, I just want a clear and straightforward list of points to make that show how scary and out of the ordinary this is for America. [more inside]
Thanks (for the newspapers), Obama
On November 5th 2008 and November 7th 2012 here in London England, I tried to collect as many British newspapers as I could that featured Barack Hussein Obama II's historic election to the presidency of the United States. The whole world was united in pride for the US on both of those days.
Now that he's moving out of the White House, I feel like it's time to give them away; the question is, who gets them? [Preferably to someone in New York City. Sorry Duluth.] [more inside]

Precedents for cutting a school program to make schools equal?
School system is trying to demonstrate equality of education across schools to comply with a longstanding federal court order. One way they are trying to achieve this is by taking away programs that are only offered at one school. Looking for other examples where this type of decision has been made, and perhaps, overturned. I've never read the paper and now at 30+ want to educate myself on Politics, Gov, Current Events, World History, etc. Where to start?
I'm over 30 and probably know as much or less about history, politics/ gov, and current events as my 7 year old niece. Now, I want to be aware and don't know where to begin. I've tried just "merging in" but the references, terms, and names are lost on me. I need a starting point that will give me a framework or bird's eye view to start from and build on. [more inside]
