Special Education/Education PhDs, what’s the academic job market like?
Based in the US and thinking about doing a PhD about disability, coming from an adjacent field. I know what the academic job market is like in my current field, but I’m not sure if it’s the same for the field in which I might end up working! Does anyone have insight on what it’s like for those in special education/education departments? [more inside]
Possible--or even desirable--to do multiple PhDs?
I’m drawn to the idea of pursuing graduate education at the doctoral level in both of the two disciplines in which I have a record of success--literature and philosophy. I’m primarily wondering if this is possible. [more inside]
What school to get Math MS - impact on getting CC teaching job?
I have an undergraduate degree in math and want to get a masters so I can teach community college. I’m choosing between three Tier 2 universities in Arizona - ASU, UA, NAU - that all come w teaching assistantships. The programs are virtually indistinguishable except one (NAU) offers a 2nd non-thesis track with coursework emphasizing Teaching Community College Mathematics. How much, if at all, will my choice influence community college hiring decisions?
What's the deal with grad school?
I got a degree in CS about 10 years ago, worked in the field for a couple of years and moved on. Now I think I want to go to grad school, but don't really know how it works... [more inside]
What have graduate students created?
What wouldn't exist now, if not for grad students? I would like to compile a massive list of high-profile or notable creations -- from inventions, to ideas, to works of art -- that were conceptualized or created by Masters/JD/MD/Ph.D seekers during their graduate education. [more inside]
I want to be a teacher. What's my plan?
I have a BA in Not Teaching. I don't reeeaallly want to go through a whole Master's program. I live in a state with ZERO Alternative Teaching Certification programs or placement opportunities (the one through my local university and alma mater just shut it's doors). I don't know what to do. More below the fold. [more inside]
How did you (YES, YOU SPECIFICALLY) pay for grad school?
The "how to pay for grad school" articles that pop up in a Google search are WOEFULLY LACKING in specifics. I'm looking for actual, specific tales of how real people out there in the world financed their Masters degrees. Feel free to get brutally honest. [more inside]

Generic letter of recommendation -- what now?
I'm applying for a fellowship, and my recommender showed me the letter he sent out on my behalf. Turns out it's rather generic and, while very positive, does not give examples of my supposed awesomeness. [more inside]
Got a generous job offer but am having trouble deciding
I'm a recent college grad about to start a master's in computer science. I'm in a very fortunate position in that I've been interning at a national lab in New Mexico this summer and have been offered a fellowship that would cover my tuition, pay me a stipend while in school, and give me a full time job after graduation. But I'm not sure that this is what I want for my career. [more inside]
Master's vs. PhD for a Program Evaluation/Impact Assessment Career
I'm halfway through a two-year master's degree in an applied social science field, and would eventually like to work as an evaluator for a non-profit or the government. Should I pursue a PhD on top of the master's? [more inside]
The Bobcat or the Tiger?
I got accepted to two PhD programs in physics, one at Clemson University, and the other at Ohio University. I have one week to make my decision and I'm frankly terrified of making the wrong one. I don't really know how either school is seen in terms of what a degree from either one would mean for my future career. I know that neither is particularly well known or prestigious (at least I'd never heard of them before I applied). So, can anyone, especially anyone who knows the ins and outs of grad school, and particularly anyone who has attended either (or both!) help me make my decision? [more inside]
I'm considering applying for a part-time PhD in Education. Am I crazy?
I am currently a high-school science teacher in the UK. I have recently had the crazy idea of pursuing a PhD in Education, part-time (and online) at a prestigious university (ranked top-5 in the world overall, if you are one to listen to rankings), while I continue my work as a teacher. Grad school application question help: Does this answer seem odd?
I am currently in the process of applying to The University of the Pacific's Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations. To answer one of the application questions I used part of a previous paper I wrote a few years back which I think answers the question well. I did cut and paste it with a few revisions and have been told it appears that way. A few other questions about it inside. [more inside]
Help me find this oneoff comic about college/grad school w/superpowers
I have a memory of a one-off comic that I saw online one time about college and grad school. There was a sort of superhero or superpowers metaphor for the whole process of higher education. Black-and-white, in pencil (?), maybe some use of green. Help me find it? [more inside]

Letter of recommendation from department graduate?
I'm considering applying to an MS program in statistics at a competitive school. A guy I've worked with holds a PhD from the statistics department at that school, and I think he'd give me a pretty good recommendation if I asked him for one. But I'm unsure whether or not that's a good thing to do, as this fellow isn't a professor. [more inside]
How can I finish my MAT graduate degree in another school?
I'd like to know what options I have for finishing a MAT (or MIT) graduate degree in and around Boston when basically I'm missing the practicum and student teaching but have acquired almost all required academic courses aside from that. I'd want to transfer something like 70-90% of my credits. I can no longer stay in my program (thanks to my advisor's say-so: it's not that I'm failing), and transferring 2 classes within the institution (to another Education degree) is possible, but I'd have to reapply, and basically take 70% of the new (general M.Ed) degree. I do like this degree. However, at this point, I've been in school so long I can't take it anymore, but I do want to teach (in an alternative school, granted). Yes, I know I can teach without a degree; at this point I would really rather not simply quit, though. [more inside]
Applying to grad school, not sure who to ask for the recommendation.
I am currently in the process of applying to grad school. I was counting on my former advisor (who wrote a glowing letter of support for me when applying for my previous job) to write me one, but am not getting a response. I would like suggestions on what to do/what other types of people qualify to write a graduate school recommendation. [more inside]
What are some useful directions for grad school?
I'm an engineer with a career in software and I recently finished an MBA from a good school. I'd like to keep the learning going, preferably in something that complements my background, but I don't have any specific direction in mind. I guess I'm hoping that someone might suggest something that's entirely off my radar. What should I be thinking about? [more inside]
What's the deal with the MSL degree?
Goes by several names: Master of Studies in Law, Master of Legal Studies, Master of Science in Law. Wikipedia says: "a master's degree offered by some law schools to students who wish to study the law but do not want to become attorneys."
I'd never heard of such a degree until recently -- is it present in the public consciousness? I read MBA or MFA and I have intuition for what those involve, but not so much MSL. [more inside]
How to decide between 2 Grad Programs: Chicago vs Boston
Hey All,
I would love some advice. I am not sure what to do. So I am going to grad school in health policy. Option A is to attend a University in Boston. I have applied and been accepted. Now Boston is twice as expensive as the local university in Chicago. However, I plan to apply for a scholarship to attend Boston. I will not find out if I am awarded this scholarship until the summer. If I am a recipient of the scholarship it comes with a 50% tuition waiver. One of the benefits of the scholarship is that there is a leadership development component and you are assigned a mentor, who is a leader in the field, in the Boston area. To apply for the scholarship, I have to commit and accept the offer to attend the school. However, if I do not get the scholarship, I would financially not be able to attend the school. So you might be able to see where this is going. On the one hand, I would like to start looking for housing and a roommate in Boston (I understand cost of living is much higher than Chicago, so I am a little freaked about that) right now, but how can I do this if I do not know if I will be attending the program? Yet another financial advice question

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood... and I took the one where I went crazy for a month to raise my score 40 points... and that uh... has made all the difference?
GRE-Filter: I was happy with my GRE scores. Then, I received word that I have the opportunity to get into a super-duper-top-tier doctoral program previously inaccessible. However, my Quantitative Score--while still in the range of accepted scores over the years for this program--is now less-than-stellar relatively speaking. Is it crazy to think I could study intensely for about a month and improve my score 30-50 points? Am I overthinking this? [more inside]

Should I complete this masters program?
LifePlansFilter: I’m currently enrolled in graduate school in a masters of secondary education in art program. Logically, I know I should take advantage of this opportunity, and start taking classes next semester, but I have some reservations: [more inside]
