Cheapish MS Teams-Compatible Tablet Recs
Our child is doing online classes via Microsoft Teams. We do not have a laptop or webcam so we use an iPhone, which is not great. We were thinking about getting a webcam but now we're thinking it may be a better value to get a tablet in the upcoming Amazon Prime sale. However, Fire tablets apparently don't do Teams. What other <$100 CDN Teams-friendly brands or models should we keep an eye out for, either available from Amazon Canada or another Canadian retailer? [more inside]

Virtual Learning Help! ISO Video Making or Editing Program
I'm an educational sign language interpreter desperately trying to find resources to make our state's virtual learning accessible to my students. I'm looking for a program (either a video making program or an editing program, I think?) that will let me put an already existing video from the internet OR a document on one side of the video and let me record myself interpreting on the other side. Do you know of any programs I can try for this? More inside. [more inside]
Good short qualifications for MS SQL Server?
I'm looking for data analysis work. Prospects are good - the couple of interviews I have had didn't get me a position but suggested I was in the top few. However, there's a big gap that keeps coming up - neither my previous work or my academic experience really had any SQL involved, and it seems to be key in many advertised positions. Can you recommend a course in MS SQL Server that would get me a well-recognized/regarded qualification? [more inside]
How do I find a mentor?
I am a 35 year old person transitioning careers from the service industry into tech. I am a little over halfway through this process. I have been charting this journey alone so far, but am approaching a couple different breakpoints and believe that a mentor would be very helpful. Details inside. [more inside]
Fun stuff for my budding computer nerd
My kid is obsessed with computers, robots, and coding. I'm going to put the difficulty level in the lede because that's really the primary reason I'm coming to Ask rather than Google: He is five and not, like, supergifted or anything. I'm having a hard time finding stuff (books, Android apps, websites, videos) for him that hits a certain sweet spot. [more inside]
Help pick a name for a maybe future business?
I've been spending a lot of time teaching older adults computer literacy skills. I've worked in retirement and nursing homes for years, and I'm very comfortable with older adults, and I love teaching, training and coaching. In order to further this service at work, I'm interested in creating a website that I can use a resource for my students, but I'm also interested in possibly expanding this as a future personal business. Please hope me name it! [more inside]
Help setting up high school computer program / club.
Two high schools in my community have fairly modern computer centres. I'd like to help setup a program that would increase the use of these computer centres to help kids improve computer skills and lead some to careers in web/software development. [more inside]
How would you transform this high school IT class?
I may be inheriting a high school class that, for the past couple of years, has consisted of students obtaining certifications in Microsoft Office (see here for the framework).
I'd like to transform this class, either a little at a time or in giant steps. Halp. [more inside]
Raspberry Pi as a gift for a 13 year old
I was considering getting a Raspberry Pi or a similar computer for my 13 year old nephew, and then taking time to set it up with him. I was thinking we could turn it into an emulator platform for a variety of 16 bit systems. What are your experiences with similar gifts, are there better options than the Pi, and what would be good applications for a kid who likes technology, math, making music and games (including Minecraft)? Good books about computer science fundamentals for newcomers?
My friend and I are interested in recommendations for books that explain fundamentals of computer science for readers without any prior knowledge - preferably not just about how to write code, but about computer science in a larger sense, and illustrated is especially helpful. For example, around 2003 I read a slim library book with explanations of fundamental computer science topics (including binary, machine code, and how compilers work) with cheesy 90s graphics, but I don't remember the title. What was that book, and what are others like it? [more inside]

Tablet piano instruction?
I have an electric, piano-weighted keyboard that I want to learn how to play. I can't afford lessons right now. It has MIDI in and out connectors. Is there a hardware/software combo that will take that MIDI out connection, plug it into an Android or iOS tablet, and provide a more interactive teaching experience? [more inside]
Tech that can run Adobe Suite, that is cheap, sturdy, and in bulk?
I need recommendations for a all in one desktop or study laptop that can run the Adobe Suite (not the newest in the creative cloud) for a new proposed Digital Arts course.
These would purely need to run Photoshop, Illustrator - some sort of video editing program, and potentially a light game design program. (Doesn't need to be Flash)
I know about different specs needed but am lost how to find what would work best and for 32+ students in one classroom.
This would be a huge investment for the High School so if I can quote under 30,000 for all the new technology it would be more likely considered. [more inside]
What should a creative yet technical person study?
What kind of academic path (from the undergraduate level and beyond) prepares one for developing or working on interesting, innovative projects like Steve Mann's EyeTap (or Google Glass), or other cool interdisciplinary digital projects (e.g. medical cybernetics, space elevators, wearable computing, smart home devices)? Learn Math Via Programming?
I have always been horrible at math, but somehow a great programmer. I have found that writing a computer program that demonstrates a certain mathematical concept enables me to better understand the concept. I'm a psych major and I brought this up once in the research lab I've been working in. My prof said he recalls that someone did research and/or created a system in which a student writes a computer program that is pertinent to a certain mathematical concept and upon completion is given the regular math problem (as it would appear in a math class). This enables the student to better understand the math problem, solve, and learn math. Has anyone heard of this or anything similar? A learning system such as this would be a blessing to my education.
Thanks.

How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet?
I am taking a brain-painful networking class (hint: it's all about the routers, baby!) and the studying is intense. It's hard, but I'm holding my own. I see questions here on AskMe that bring really cool answers from lots of folks, with a lot of repeat answerers, which leads me to ask, How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet? Was it in school? Did you apprentice with someone who had m4d sk1lz? Did you teach yourself? Other?
