dissertation-free research

I love research and learning, and keep running into a lot of research groups and programs that sound absolutely fascinating. However, most of them either involve getting a Masters or Ph.D., or require possession of a Ph.D. beforehand - which I do not want. Is there any way I can still get involved with these research groups that doesn't involve being responsible for an academic paper? Are there similar groups that do this kind of research work that aren't necessarily academic? [more inside]

How do you use what you learned in school?

As a tutor of every age group from kindergarten to college, I often hear the sensible question, "When am I ever going to use this in real life?" I would like to be able to better answer this, and so I ask you, Metafilter, when do you ever use the things you learned in school? Do you use math? English? History? If so, what parts? And how? I'd like to hear some suggestions on how I can do that; lots more detail to be found inside, as well as my reasoning on the subject so far. [more inside]

What kick ass programs do they have that motivate kids and help them figure out and work towards their futures? Are there any ventures/tools that support or replace the career counseling that kids get in school? [more inside]

Do you think that graduating from college with a low GPA is the end of the world? If someone graduated from college with a 2.5 or 2.6 overall GPA, could that person still be successful in his or her career, live a rewarding life, pursue hobbies, and travel around the world? Or would that person be confined to flipping burgers or working at Walmart for the rest of his or her life?
