Trends in YA and Middle Grade publishing

Some years ago I read an article about the history of the YA novel which posited that YA is a marketing term. (Example: The Outsiders probably would have been marketed as a YA novel today but the category didn’t exist then). I’m looking for historical information about YA and middle grade novels. What are 10-15 books to read to make it seem like you went to college?

Met a girl who got out of an abusive relationship and is starting over. Had a kid early. Bad parents. The whole deal. Yet somehow she has the poise and personality of someone who's educated...even if she isn't. Is very self conscious of the fact. I said she can fake it if she just reads enough and retains it. So what should be on that reading list today?

Classroom Reading Tracking/Book Sharing Software

I'm doing a lot of extensive reading this year, and asking my students (near-native English speaking Japanese 7-10th graders with overseas or international school experience) to read several books this year. I would like to have some way to a) track books students are reading, and b) have a community page of some sort where students can share the books they've read, and their responses to them. What other books are like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Education of Little Tree? I really liked the "life lessons" that these books demonstrate through showing rather than telling. How to find common literary ground: Dostoevsky vs Rick Riordan

Without a bunch of unnecessary back story, I used to be an avid reader, read many of the classics, but these days I tend to only enjoy teen drama/sci fi with quick pacing like Hunger Games, the Magicians, Percy Jackson, etc. I always preferred more contemporary stuff as soon as I was far enough in college to specialize (e.g. Thomas Pynchon over Austen), but now I feel like my taste is not on par with my education, and mostly I don't care about that because I like what I like, but part of me does care, and I wonder about trying to get back to some more literary/learned media. I say "media" because ideally I'd like to expand my tastes for tv shows and movies also. [more inside]

Civic Education Recommendations

I realized recently that there is a ton that I do not know about the workings of our government & country. This was most recently on display during the 2017 tax bill fiasco, attempting to figure out what the hell was going on, or what the next steps would be after the Senate approved something at 2am. While I wish I had paid more attention in high school, those days are long gone. Does anyone have a recommendation for a textbook or even online course that would provide an in-depth understanding of how things work? [more inside]

Children's books that encourage questioning everything

There's a new baby in our family, and I'm building a library so he'll have interesting things to read when he's 5, 10, 15... What children's books pack a powerful intellectual punch for their size? I'm looking for ones that make the reader question everything (e.g. social norms, traditions, their identity, even consensual reality). Kind of like a Philip K Dick book but for children. Also good: anything which encourages precociousness (like Matilda). A few that came to mind: 1) Eat Now, Pay Later. Short story I asked about here years ago: 2) The Sneeches, by Dr. Seuss 3) Matilda, Roald Dahl

Good books about computer science fundamentals for newcomers?

My friend and I are interested in recommendations for books that explain fundamentals of computer science for readers without any prior knowledge - preferably not just about how to write code, but about computer science in a larger sense, and illustrated is especially helpful. For example, around 2003 I read a slim library book with explanations of fundamental computer science topics (including binary, machine code, and how compilers work) with cheesy 90s graphics, but I don't remember the title. Where to find free non-literary book summaries?

This summer I have a lot of reading to do: some books about physics and math applied to sports, others about evidence-based sport conditioning, objectivism, ... stuff that built up because I didn't had to read it. When I read books I like to have a top down view of the subject but most books' introduction fail to do so, either because it is too short and not enough to give a good overview of each chapter or because they not even try to summarise the contents of the books and on how to use the book. What is the best non-fiction book for kids in your field of study/work?

My kids (currently 6 and 9) have become voracious readers. We have a large and varied collection of excellent fiction for them, but the non-fiction collection is more haphazard. They love learning new facts as they read (the type of thing that makes them look up from the book and say, "Did you know...?"). I want to make sure that the collection of books gives them a good introduction to fields where I myself may not have enough knowledge to judge the quality/accuracy of the book. So what's the kid's book in your field that makes you say, "If only every kid got to read this book, people would understand [topic] better."? [more inside]

Do ousted male lions lose their manes?

I was reading a book to my son (Face to face with Lions from National Geographic) and found a very interesting statement about male lions that our ousted from their Pride. According to this book, a male lion averages only 3-4 years as a leader of a pride, before a younger lion comes in and kicks out the old guard. The book says that the old pride leader then tends to lose his mane, making him look more feminine, which helps him be able to stick around with his pride, without confusing anyone as to who the real leader is now. How do I find, collect, beg, borrow (but not steal) new books for a school library that is filled with 30 year old, out of date, books?

Boy brought home this ancient science book from the school library. I mean, so ancient that it was just flat out false. (It was about global warming, and had been written in the 80's and 90's. It was hopelessly out of date.) When I talked to the librarian about it, she said that they had almost no books newer than 10 years old, and that more than half the collection was over 25 years old.
