Virtual art classes for 9-12 year olds

We did some virtual art classes during spring break for my daughter and she really likes them. Can you recommend drawing classes for kids that cover realistic drawing and perspective, and are weekly or biweekly? Ideally these classes would be in the Bay Area in case we ever get back to in person instruction, but could be anywhere. We would like a class with other kids but if that fails an art tutor would be ok. The main complication is that we would like the classes to start before the end of the school year, or at least be some type of class where kids can drop in midway. They are not interested in drawing cartoon characters/anime or doing a single illustration, they are more interested in learning the principles of drawing at this point.

If you want to be a digital animator, to which school would you go?

My 17 year old son wants to be an animation artist. Awesome! He definitely has the ability (both artistically and digitally as he is fluent in more programming languages than I, a computer scientist, am) but we are now arguing about the school. I'm pushing for Cal Arts. He is resistant because my ex-husband, whom he hates, went there. So, I'm looking for schools that are great at digital art and animation. This is not an easy thing to Google, I keep getting Devry. More below... [more inside]

Help me come up with a meaningful - yet dull - alternative assignment.

I am a first-year high school art teacher. I need something for a couple students to do for the next three weeks that is relevant but not as interesting as what other students are working on. I want ideas that aren't just "write an essay on x topic", unless that really is the best option. [more inside]

How can I learn to be a very good acrylic painter?

I've been a professional writer all my working life--non-fiction: newspapers, national magazines, books, tv--and now that I'm semi-retired I'm attempting to learn a new skill. Painting. It's thrilling to see the world in a new way and I love it. The instructor is delightful: accomplished and generous with praise. I've taken her beginners' course and learned a lot--by my subjective eye, I went from worst in the class to second best. Now I'm in the follow-up course. But I'm not very good yet and nearly all the 15 or so others in this class have painted for years or have taken lots of courses, and they're embarrassingly far ahead of me. I know that I must "compete" only with myself. I know that I can advance only at my own pace and that should be fine. But I want to learn faster! I want to be the best! I'm reading books, and practicing outside class, and messing around with different paints and colors and substrates, and that helps. Is there anything else I might do that would help me learn faster? Tips? Reading? Materials? Just practicepracticepractice? See, I don't even know enough yet to ask a clear and concrete question. Mefi artists, can you show me the way?

How do I get started in technical illustration and animation?

I've always admired great technical illustration, such as in a good Physics or Mathematics textbook. I'm jealous of illustrators that can also do animation, such as in this Google Docs promo video (just a recent example, not necessarily a pinnacle). But I have next to no illustration experience myself, and have always been intimidated by programs like Adobe Illustrator. Is technical illustration and animation accessible to the new adult hobbyist, and is it feasible to cultivate visual artistic ability in adulthood given a lack of previous experience? Are classes useful for this, or a waste of time? [more inside]

Contemporary Art History and Theory

Help me learn as much as I can about the history and theory of contemporary art. I would at this point, love to take up a full time course for two years on the above, but for several reasons I cannot do so. I can however, spend 3-4 hours daily to read and study. I also spend almost three months of the year travelling to various biennales, museums and collections around the world to up my knowledge. But while I am fairly up to date with what is going on today, I need to get myself a proper history so i know the context of what I am seeing. So if someone could provide me with a systematic syllabus of what I need to read, it would be appreciated. An actual syllabus from a top notch program would be the best. A great book I read on the subject was "Shock of the New" by Robert Hughes.

"School sucks, except for art!"

My son (13 y.o., 8th grade) is exhibiting innate talent in the visual arts. Last night, he bemoaned to me that he wished his school curriculum was weighted more heavily on the art side. This got me thinking about looking into magnet-type high-schools and other schools that feature strong arts education. Any suggestions on where I should start looking and issues to consider? Any thoughts about the necessity of a "portfolio" and what that entails? Did you or someone close to you attend a school like this; if so, what were your experiences? (I am art-clueless, so the more detail, the better. We live in the Boston/Cambridge MA area.) [more inside]

Too Cool For Photography School?

Next year I will graduate from college with a double concentration in English and French.
