DC summer intern housing & advice?

My college-age kid just got a summer internship in DC/Capitol Hill and needs a place to live. I see that there are a bunch of schools + private companies that do summer housing, and I'm sure there are a million more if you factor in Airbnb, sublets, etc. Did your kid do this and do you have a specific recommendation for me? Also, what do you wish you/your kid knew before doing an internship like this?

Apartment hunting in DC. Difficulty level: Four Cats

OK, I'm ACTUALLY moving to DC now. I need help. Where do I look? Like, what websites? Craigslist isn't turning up a lot in my price range. Is that because of Craiglist, or because my expectations are unrealistic? Are there secret Facebook communities for finding housing? How much does having four cats screw me over? I have a list of things I'd like inside and I'm not sure if they're possible or where to find such apartments. I would also appreciate any general tips for DC apartment hunting. [more inside]

Relocating for job: When to what?

I anticipate relocating from GA to VA in late May or early June for a job. I have an offer letter in hand with salary that is a hair under my current salary (changing fields/roles). Spouse works in a field where he is confident he can get a job fairly easily and would almost certainly have a higher salary than now due to the location, but has not started looking for work in earnest yet. We are looking to buy a house in the new location though prefer not to sell our current place if we can help it. [more inside]

Should I take this apartment? Nice and fits my needs, but in a bad area.

I found a new apartment complex in DC that hits all of my wants (laundry in the apartment home/unit, next to public transportation, has my own toilet, and is new/nice and modern). It's in a very sketchy area, though, so I'm unsure. Can't make my mind up! [more inside]

Help me get out of DC environs (but still commute to UMD)

I'm having trouble mashing up neighborhood recommendations, apartment listings, and public transportation maps. Could you advise me on places to rent way outside of the main University of Maryland campus/DC area (e.g. no Silver Spring!) that still let me commute into campus via less than 2 hour public transportation? DC area ok for Chinese students?

(Passed on from an ESL teacher friend of mine, who got the question from one of her students...) A group of Chinese businessmen will be coming to DC to study at Georgetown. D.C.-neighborhoodfilter: How's this area and this rent?

(Posting for a friend, on behalf of their friend, all three of us equally un-D.C. savvy:) A friend of mine is thinking about renting in an apartment in Washington DC, near P St NW and 4th St NW. Based on some internet research, it looks like this is the Truxton Circle or Shaw neighborhood, but we're not quite sure about that. She's a single white female in her mid-twenties, and will be a student keeping irregular hours. She has a car, and has lived in major cities before, though always in relatively safe areas. How safe is this neighborhood? What is the crime situation like? Will she be comfortable walking around alone at night? [more inside]

Should I move into a month-to-month before finding a long-term place?

I am looking for a place to stay in or near Washington DC - I need to move in by November 1. I have found a place which I could stay for a few months (month-to-month rent) but until I could find something that more closely fits my preferences. Should I go with this place now before it is gone, or should I try to find a place I would be comfortable with long-term within the next week and a half? [more inside]

Where can I find temporary lodging in the D.C. area, quickly?

HousingFilter: I'm desperately seeking to sublet/rent a room in the D.C. area, where I'll be interning from June 14th through August 6th. I've hit up Craig's List, Roll Call, The Hill, Roomates.com, Sabbaticalhomes.com, and the Weekly Paper. I've tried the various universities, but I don't relish the idea of sharing a bunk bed. Anyone got any other bright ideas about where I might look on such short notice without actually having to be in D.C.? Barring that, anyone got a room for rent that's even slightly accessible to Dupont Circle? [more inside]
