Repulsed by feeling nostalgic

Wistful music and anything else that induces nostalgia have always made me feel sick. I'm curious why this happens and whether other people also experience it. Assuming that the answer to "Am I the only one who..." is always no, I'd like to know if others have written about this response. I'm also interested to know if other people have a similar response to wistful music even if it's not for the same reason. [more inside]

Help me manage the heat of my bed

It’s the hot season where I live and the main bedroom (the coolest room in the house) is around 90F for most of the day. When it’s bed time and I turn the AC on the air cools off quickly enough, but the bedding and in particular the mattress take a minimum of an hour to get to room temperature (generally around 75F). Are there tricks for dealing with this?

Why season/condition a new granite mortar and pestle with garlic?

I just bought a new granite mortar and pestle. All the instructions for how to season it that I can find (including the instructions that came with it) describe rinsing it with water then grinding uncooked rice 2-3 times until it finishes white, then a garlic clove then usually salt, pepper, and cumin. But I can't find out any information on why - what is the function of everything after the rice? [more inside]

Beliefs about "what should be" leads to beliefs about "what is"?

Is there any academic argument or scientific evidence that what people believe about "what should be" leads them to develop underlying beliefs about "what is" in reality? A kind of worldview conditioning? Conceptually, this would be an inversion of the naturalistic fallacy (which goes from "what is" to "what ought"). Does such a thing happen?

How wet is too wet for a basement carpet?

The basement floor drain where condensation from my AC unit drains backed up, leading to a minor leak which soaked a small section of carpet (maybe 50 sq feet). I'm guessing it was 4-8 gallons of water total that leaked, and that it had been wet 24-36 hours before we noticed. The back up now is fixed. I've got every fan in the house blowing on the area of carpet. Do I need to do anything else? I'm thinking I don't need professional help given the amount of water and that a few days of the fans blowing in that corner of the basement will dry it out without permanent damage.

How can I change my relationship with spending?

I want to become one of those people who dislikes buying things and enjoys saving. I'm a real spendthrift right now, but I'd really like to shift my thinking so that paying bills and saving money create pleasure, and buying things other than those expenses creates discomfort or boredom. Currently, going out shopping will get me out of the house when nothing else will, even if it's "shopping" for cleaning supplies and I only spend ten dollars. I get a sense of relief when I make purchases and then the pleasure of looking at, say, those shiny bright new bottles of household cleaner and sponges, even though I don't neccessarily need them is pleasurable. I also feel like I have achoeved or accomplished something when I buy stuff... [more inside]

He needs to cool off fast!

Need help finding the right air conditioner. My son cannot find a window unit for his apartment - the window is a bizarre 15.25" wide, 11" high. According to calculations, he should need something that pushes out no more than 6,000 BTUs, but his current portable is rated at 8,000 BTUs and is still not cooling off the room. The brand name is "Roam-Air" an older machine my husband took from a building that was closing down. My son lives in Queens and it's HOT....any suggestions?

It's too darn hot. How to cool off my studio apartment?

How can I cool off my NY studio apartment this summer? Our building has central air conditioning, and while it's cold enough when I sit right next to the unit, the rest of the apartment gets boiling hot. During today's heat wave, when it was 82 outside, a thermometer sitting on the unit read 70 degrees. On the other side of the room, it was more like 75, and on the other side of of the apartment, almost 80. The building doesn't allow window air conditioners. This is making living here really uncomfortable -- what else can I do to cool this place off? [more inside]

Stopping the steam from coming out of my cars air conditioning

I have a 1999 Volvo S70. I was driving yesterday when foul smelling steam started coming out of the air conditioning vents and also from underneath the ashtray. My coolant level was very low (the reservoir was empty), and I added a whole gallon of coolant but it did not stay in the reservoir. Is my coolant pooling somewhere bad or do I just need to add more? Also is it possible to remove a fuse or something so my air conditioning won't turn on at all until I can take it in to get fixed? As it is now, steam starts coming out of the vents after about five minutes of driving. [more inside]
