Back to school for a biology PhD: good idea right now?

A friend, early 30s, is considering leaving a 10-year career in public school teaching to do a PhD in biology (program ranking= low 170s in the US News biosciences list). As a way of transitioning to a career in anything not-secondary-teaching, how good or bad of a decision is this likely to be? [more inside]

Good news: I know I want to teach. Bad-ish news: Which route do I take?

I am an editor and writer with a BA and an MA. I've been accepted to at least one of the PhD in rhetoric/communication programs I've applied to—and fully funded (albeit with a limited stipend, but that's to be expected). If I decide to go, I start this fall. However, I can't shake the feeling that maybe I want to be teaching high school language arts. But do I really? [more inside]

Day in The Life of a professor or research scientist

I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on the daily experience of a university researcher in either psychology or the basic sciences as well as a meta-review of the job as a whole. [more inside]

You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don't know for sure.

Around Thanksgiving, I was given a temporary full-time staff position at a well-known university research lab. (See this question.) Well, I've been officially offered a job as a proper member of the lab, tuition benefits and all. This is quite literally the best opportunity I've ever had. I'm extremely interested in the field of clinical psychology and eventually becoming some kind of therapist. Where do I go from here? [more inside]

Transfer from a so-so undergrad history program or finish with a 4.0: the grad school prospects.

I'm going to be graduating from a small 'top 25 private university in the West', not the best, not terrible, with a 4.0. I'm interested in pursuing History as a career and want to get into a great Ph.d program. (Interests include American, Post-Modern, historiography, historical memory.) Recently, I've considered transferring to a top private university with more prestige: will this benefit me in the application process or will my glowing recommendations, independent research and grades equally impress from my middle tier school? At this point, it seems like a gamble either way. [more inside]

PhD Pi or Blueberry Pie?

Get a PhD by 50, or go to pastry school? I'm having a midlife crisis and am considering returning to school instead of launching another business. (Launching another business is already in the planning stages, but no hard commitments have been made.) I've been accepted to a graduate program for neuroscience that will let me do masters work and doctorate work at the same time. On the other hand...culinary school is calling to me...daring me to become a pastry chef. [more inside]

Advice about applying to graduate school while abroad

I'm looking for information for applying to grad school while abroad. (PhD programs in Political Science/International Relations). I graduated from college in spring 2006, and I'm planning on applying next year (Fall '09) to start in Fall 2010. I'm also considering going to Israel in July and staying for about 10 months, and I want to make sure this won't impact my grad school plans in any way. [more inside]
