An American Werewolf in Canada

[Cultural Differences / Armchair Anthropology Filter] I am moving to Canada next month. American expatriates in Canada, what do you wish you had known before moving? What small (or glaring) cultural, institutional, infrastructural or procedural differences did you start to notice after being there for a while? (Also, for the Canadians: are there things that you wish American expatriates knew before they got there, or wish they’d stop doing or start doing?) [more inside]

Canadian pediatrician moving to USA

I am Canadian in academia and am considering moving to the US in the next year. My partner is a pediatrician (MD, LMCC) who is board-certified in Canada in pediatrics, ie she has her FRCPC designation. If we move to the US, she would like to work, which could be additional fellowship training or working in private practice as a pediatrician. Questions about the legal/certification requirements inside... [more inside]

Information on work permits in Canada

My american fiance has potentially been offered a job in Canada... we've been reading that a labour market opinion is required in order to offer him a job, as we are trying to get all the legwork out of the way. We have found the websites necessary, and all the forms, but I'm looking for any personal anecdotes from any MeFites out there who may have had to do a similar thing - looking specifically for potential processing times, etc. [more inside]

Canadians are so friendly I'd like to be one...

On my sister's behalf: What is the best chance for my husband (and therefore me) to immigrate to B.C.? He is 53 (not good according to the Canadian point system), and has a great offer of work from a friend in Victoria who is a designer/builder of homes. My husband would be hired as a foreman, as he's a highly skilled and experienced carpenter, and is capable of managing and training crews. His formal education doesn't go beyond high school, his English language skills are good (but not his French), he has no criminal record, and he's in very good health. [more inside]
