Christmas in New York City: What's not to miss?

We, a family of four with two adult children from New Zealand, are spending two weeks around Christmas and New York in New York City. What is not to be missed, and indeed to be avoided, from a Christmas point of view? We like food, music - classical and jazz - and museums. Any thoughts on where to have Christmas Eve or Christmas Day lunch? We have some pretty strong family traditions (mainly Hungarian) at this time of the year but these are normally based around our home. It will be exciting to try something new. We will be staying in Williamsburg if that helps. All suggestions welcome.

What's fun for preteens near the New York City Transit Museum?

Chaperoning several pre-teens to this area of Brooklyn where none of us have ever been; we're out-of-towners. What are some quirky, offbeat stores, ethnic restaurants, haircutting places--no tatoos, or piercings--that some 13-14 out-of-town kids might find fun within, say, 20 minutes' walking time from the NYC Transit Museum at Boerum and Schemerhorn in Brooklyn Heights? Yes, we'll be doing the Brooklyn Bridge separately.

Bar with a view in Brooklyn

Looking for a bar in Brooklyn with a view of Manhattan for a party of eight that will allow reservations for pre-dinner drinks. Any ideas? Must allow reservations - don't want to turn up and wing it. Indoor also preferred, but outdoor fine too (if it means a view is possible).

Need quick thoughts - apartment hunt crisis!

Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)

Bagless dogs on Brooklyn subways recently?

In the last month, I've noticed a lot of people bringing their pet dogs on the train with no bag? Has anyone else noticed if MTA has been more relaxed about this recently? This last gal strolled her black lab across the platform at Morgan Ave L in front of employees with no repercussions. Does MTA really care enough to ticket anymore? [more inside]

Detective/Mystery Novels in Current Day New York?

A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]

Am I insane to buy a mk1 Toyota MR2 if I live in NYC without a garage?

I live in Brooklyn, sans garage, and have recently gotten it into my head that I want a small used car for occasional driving... I'm talking about the few miles to my office a couple times a week, maybe to the beach on weekends. Perhaps as far as the Jersey shore once or twice a summer. I do not intend or need to use it as a daily commuter. Seems pretty simple, only catch is... I am infatuated with the idea of getting a mk1 Toyota MR2. [more inside]

Writing spot in Lower Manhattan or upper Brooklyn

When I lived in Chicago, there was a great late-night coffee shop called New Wave Cafe in Logan Square that was perfect for after-work writing. I've been having a hard time finding a similar spot since moving to NYC. It doesn't need to be a coffee shop, but it does need to be well-lit enough that I can read, and calm enough that I won't be seen as preventing the establishment from doing business. Bonus points if the place has a neighborhood-y feel with a friendly staff. I live in Greenpoint, work in SoHo, and usually commute via bicycle over the Williamsburg Bridge. Any suggestions, Metafilter?

Help With Apartment Hunting in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Moving to New York from Florida to take a job at the beginning of January, and i'm having some trouble finding a good place to live, mostly that I don't really know how to find good places that aren't on craigslist/padmapper. The friend i'm going to live with works in Greenpoint, so we're leaning heavily on that neighborhood, just off the Greenpoint or Nassau stops, so only one of us has to take the subway to work. Pick A Place To Party

I want to rent an event space in NYC. Where do I start? It's basically a wedding reception without the wedding, I'd like it to hold about eighty people, with an open bar and using my own caterers. It should be three hours booked at least. I'd like it in Manhattan but totally open to nearer Brooklyn and Queens. What do I need to know and where should I go in getting a space for late October?
