Leather briefcase under $250?

I really like the Fossil Asher leather briefcase but $395 is out of my price range. Can MeFites recommend a similar brown leather briefcase that is under $250? I would like to buy from a company that pays workers fairly and has safe working conditions. Leather alternatives are fine. (Unfortunately, MeFi favorite Tom Bihn is a little too casual for my work environment(s).)

Best duffle with backpack straps for a smallish person?

To reduce back pain I'd like to switch from a shoulder strap duffle bag to one with backpack straps. I'm suddenly overwhelmed by all the different options. What duffles with backpack straps do shorter-statured MeFites like? And if I travel with a 50L shoulder strap duffle now, should I expect that a 50L backpack duffle will also do the job or look into a different size? [more inside]

Backpack for EDC

Favourite backpack broke. Sad. Need new one. Must be 18-25L, laptop compartment, blue or green, external water bottle side pocket, good internal organisation e.g. pen holders, smaller pockets, not too outdoorsy, not too formal, water resistant and handsome looking. Not much to ask for? Any price is a good price.

Zip Flat Backpack

About 20 years ago while hosteling through Europe, I saw someone who had a backpack that zipped flat and both sides had mesh covers so nothing shifted around. It wasn’t as big as a frame backpack, but was bigger than a typical school bag. Where can I find something similar? The zip flat with mesh dividers covering both sides is what I’m after. Thank you!

Looking for a practical bag that fits these weird criteria

I'm looking for a practical bag that fits the following quite weird criteria. It must hold a cylinder that's 7.5" in diameter and 5" tall in its own dedicated compartment. It must be easy to carry messenger-bag-style and reasonably water resistant. You get bonus points for any of the following: a separate compartment that fits a pair of sneakers; a compartment that would fit a few diapers or t-shirts; a water bottle holder on the outside; a cell phone pocket on the outside. Minimalist laptop-on-bike carry

Plastic bags, the more sustainable choice? Break it down please...

Like many municipalities, my town and state are both in the process of trying to pass a ban on single-use plastic bags. Opposers of the ban keep putting forward a handful of life cycle analysis studies of paper vs. plastic vs. cloth reusable bags that find that plastic bags had the least impact on the environment. While I understand the complexities of LCA study and recognize these are mostly government studies and not likely plastic-lobby bias, my strong feeling is that when all forms of impact are considered, plastic is still a net negative. I want to be able to point out the limitations of these studies. What do they miss or exclude? [more inside]
