Beach/Chill International Trips with a ~20 month old

We are thinking of travelling internationally with a sub 2 year old in the next year in locations direct from DC. The options would be most islands in Caribbean, Cancun, Guatemala, Costa Rica (most preferred). We're looking mostly for something that would be stress-less with an active 20 month old, but with a little bit of actual culture (my default trip is NOT a beach vacation), ideally not requiring any driving (shuttles, public transportation). Cost would be moderate. Where would you recommend? Specific locations/towns/resorts ideal?

Is it time to go home to Massachusetts? Covid 19 edition

Hi, ask mefi. My husband, baby and I traveled to Va on March 9th. Extended house work planned to take 2 weeks. We’re staying at my in-laws. Pandemic! It’s been 7 weeks. I am scared to make the 12 hour trip with a 5 month old to Massachusetts, the third biggest outbreak site in the country. We are welcome to stay here and have all been getting along fairly well. But, it’s been weeks since we’ve been home! Should we stay or should we go now? [more inside]

2000 mile road trip with a newborn

We received the amazing good news that we were picked by someone for an adoption and find ourselves suddenly going to pick up a newborn. But because of current circumstances, we can’t fly home with the (Healthy!) baby. We are going to be first time parents driving from Ohio to California with a 5 day old girl. Please help me make this as painless as possible! How can I best prepare for this drive (taking place probably Tuesday)?

Traveling to San Francisco with unvaccinated baby

My wife needs to attend an event in San Francisco next month, and we're thinking of going there as a family (note: we don't live in the US). However, our smallest will only be 11 months old then, and will not have been given her MMR vaccine yet. Given the rise in unvaccinated children in the US, and associated measles outbreaks, is this advisable?

What to do in Austin when you're breastfeeding?

There's a conference I'd like to go to in Austin at the beginning of November, but Minipenny is still breast feeding which complicates things. Misterpenny and I talked about making it a short family trip. A couple of days (well, day and a half) on our own and then a day and a half (and at least one evening) of him being on full childcare duties and me at the conference. I used to have the conference travel down, and enjoyed getting to see a bit of a new city, but it's a whole new ballgame now...we've never traveled with the baby, and have never been to Austin, so I'm having trouble knowing how to go about the planning, or if this is even a good idea. Visiting New Orleans with an infant

My wife and I will be visiting New Orleans at the end of this month with our almost 1-year old son. Having the baby with us has required two contingencies: we are renting a car, and our days will have to end by 6:30 or 7 pm-ish (although they do start at 6:30-7am). We will also need to find a quiet place for him to nap during the day, or else sit in the car/return to our lodging for an hour or so. I am hoping he'll nap in the stroller as we wander the city, but can't take this for granted. Given this, and the fact that we only have two days (Friday-22 and Monday-25, the weekend is taken up by the wedding we are travelling for) how best to organize our time? Any advice on travelling with an infant? [more inside]

Baby on a bus situation

So it looks like I might need to start taking the baby on the bus to her daycare, which is downtown. I say baby… she's pretty much a toddler now, being just under one and a half, and pretty squirmy with it to. My preferred travel option with her when on foot is to put her in a backpack, which she loves and which chills her right out, but we also have a stroller. So… what is the best way to carry her on the bus? I've considered just standing with her in the backpack the whole way, but it seems like there might be a safety concern. There's taking the backpack off and keeping her in it, which seems like it might have similar concerns. Taking her right out of the backpack and putting her in my lap seems like it might be the most safety conscious option, but that assumes a seat and that she will stay put - that later condition being highly unlikely. And then it may be the same deal with the stroller. Thoughts?

Help us turn Manhattan into an island of joy (with a four-month old).

Mr. Brunette and I are headed to Manhattan this week with our four-month old for a three-day excursion. We've already seen this so we think we've got the car seat/cab thing sussed but we're still seeking tips for making the most of a hot, long weekend. Considering the kid won't remember any of this, we're aiming to do things that we'll enjoy but that also are suitable for carting around the baby and snap and go stroller. We're staying on the Upper West Side and are keen to visit the MoMA, Museum of Natural History and the Guggenheim. Debating the Circle Line cruise and wondering how this is best done (if at all) with long lines, car seat, etc. Also, any tips on vegetarian, baby friendly restaurants? Thanks!
