Guidance on running a freelance business in Ontario, Canada

I'm stepping away from my current role and for a period of time, maybe a long time, will be trying to structure a life around freelance work. Lots of questions: how much should I set aside for taxes? What are the laws on deductions? Do I need fancy-assed Business Software, or can I just make things work with spreadsheets and diligence? Can you recommend a book, website, or other resource that has an A-Z for setting up as a freelancer in Ontario? [more inside]

Thrift Store Screen Prints: Anyone Know Who This Artist Is?

At least 20 years ago my wife bought this serigraph at a Value Village here in Toronto, just ‘cause it’s cool in a funky mid-century kind of way. We love it, but despite the signature, we could never find out who did it. Yesterday at the Salvation Army she found another one! Same style, same signature (Fr? Frank? Smulders maybe???) The new one is marked that it’s 27/60 prints. Likely a Toronto, or Ontario, or at the very least a Canadian artist. She emailed an art gallery but they had no idea.

Will the 10:30 Toronto-Kinsgston Via Train be on time for the eclipse?

Looking to take a train tomorrow from Toronto to Kingston to see the eclipse. The eclipse starts at 2:09, totality at 3:22. The train is scheduled to arrive at 12:49. Is there info on how often that train is delayed and by how long? Is there any reason to expect greater delays than usual tomorrow?

Where to view April 2024 solar eclipse within a day's travel from Boston

I have booked tickets for April travel to Boston, from which I hope to travel to a location where I will have a good chance of viewing the 2024 solar eclipse. Boston itself is well outside the path of totality, but there appear to be a bunch of suitable locations one could reach within a day's travel. If you wanted to see the eclipse, what would you select as a destination that maximizes the chances of good viewing conditions (primary consideration) and is also perhaps a nice place to visit for other reasons (secondary consideration)? Is my neighbour's landlord legally liable for ongoing dog noise issues?

(ON, Canada) We own our semi-detached house. New rental neighbours moved in 3 months ago to the other side of the house. They have 2 large and very noisy dogs. While they are out, the dogs bark constantly for hours on end. We have paper thin walls and you can hear it as if the dog was sitting beside you. Last night the dogs barked constantly for over 4 hours starting at 9pm and then randomly all the way through to 5am. We were holding off, allowing the dogs to settle into their new home, but enough is enough. [more inside]

Where to learn survival skills in or near Toronto?

I want to learn some survival skills. This is deliberately broad - it could mean anything from gardening, preserving food, advanced first aid, wilderness survival… I just want to feel more equipped to survive a natural disaster or societal collapse, and to be a more confident, self sufficient person in general. What would you recommend?

Driving through upstate NY tomorrow (Sat 11/19)

Can anyone give me a read on whether it seems ok to drive through upstate NY (specifically, Watertown/Thousand Islands on 81 to Ontario) tomorrow, Sat 11/19, given the weather? Just from the snow totals and timing/descriptions it looks possibly ok as long as I'm through there during the late afternoon (no plans to leave the highway there), but I don't know if I really understand lake effect snow. Help a Canadian Stay In Her Own Lane

Does motive play into estate planning?

I have a friend in Toronto who owns a rental property. She wants to evict the current "excellent tenant" so that her pregnant granddaughter can move in. Ontario law says that she cannot do that unless it's her daughter, not her granddaughter. As a result, she now wants to change the title to put her daughter as co-owner so that she can then do the eviction. I believe this is unethical. I'm curious if it's unlawful. [more inside]

I picked up two of these lamps for free at the Carling Dump in Ontario this summer. Both shades are broken, and I'd like to replace them. I'm guessing they're Canadian. Problem is I have absolutely no idea how to go about finding them, given their provenance. Googling the model number on the base doesn't help. Safest affordable way to move from Toronto to Vancouver?

We're moving our largish 1 bedroom apartment's worth of stuff (furniture, dishes, books, decor) at the end of August. Our first pick would be to hire a moving company. But is there any reputable moving company under the sun? Every company has a slew of horror stories: broken and lost stuff, extortionist price hikes or inflated weight claims, massive delays. Do you know of any affordable company that can be trusted, or a company that's pricier but more reliable? Or, would it be best to just do the packing, driving, and gas-buying ourselves in a UHaul?

Do all roads _really_ lead to Brampton?

Bramptonites of Ontario! The Mrs. and I are thinking of getting out of dodge (e.g. Toronto) in the next year or two, and Brampton seems like a possible stepping stone to tide us over until we can work towards moving way out further west in the long term. How is downtown Brampton (e.g. around Gage Park) these days? Is it somewhere that is worth considering in terms of living? Proximity to the GO train is a plus and I've heard rumours of revitalization coming down the pipes, but is it an enjoyable place to live now?

I live in Ontario. I have a neighbor with four cars on his front yard and three sets of plates. One is presumably for parts and never moves. The others come and go, but sometimes, the neighbor will switch the plates between cars. In Ontario the plates are registered to a car so if someone ran the plates they should see the problem.
