NYC to EWR on Thanksgiving
I'm catching an international flight out of Newark on Thanksgiving Day, departing in the early evening. What's the best way to get to the airport from Manhattan that day (I was going to take the train from Penn Station)? How much extra time should I give myself? Any advice for surviving the experience?
NYC: Tasty Vegetarian Options south of 31st dining filter
What are some restaurants with tasty vegetarian options in Manhattan? Looking especially for places south of 31st, and ideally north of Houston. We'll be there in April, so if it's closing on March 31 don't tell us! We love Xi'an food but aren't sure Xi'an Famous Foods has anything vegetarian. We also love Malaysian food and can't get any Malaysian vegetarian options where we are. Outdoor dining is a plus.
New York non-resident tax withholdings
I am a non-resident working variable, part-time hours for an organization in NYC. Presumably I will owe NYS and NYC taxes. How do I ensure that I have sufficient withholdings to cover my tax liability? (Yes, I have an accountant. Who is not licensed in NY and cannot advise me.) I will make less than $10k at this job - does it even make sense to have tax withheld, or should I just pay up when I file? Help.
Finding a suit this week in NYC
I need to get a (men's) suit or separates to wear to a wedding by Friday, in NYC. Before I fall back on the standard mid-range department stores, I'm interested in taking a day on anything more specific to New York. [more inside]

Manhattan history detectives: what church is (was?) this?

Driving through upstate NY tomorrow (Sat 11/19)
Can anyone give me a read on whether it seems ok to drive through upstate NY (specifically, Watertown/Thousand Islands on 81 to Ontario) tomorrow, Sat 11/19, given the weather? Just from the snow totals and timing/descriptions it looks possibly ok as long as I'm through there during the late afternoon (no plans to leave the highway there), but I don't know if I really understand lake effect snow. Repeated article about walking from 42nd St to Central Park underground?
There is an article that appears in either New York Magazine or the New Yorker from time to time in which the writer tries to get from a building at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street to Central Park South without going outside. [more inside]
Only Something in the Building?
There is a new Hulu show called Only Murders in the Building. The show gets its title from a true-crime podcast created by the three main characters that is also called "Only Murders in the Building". The show seems to think this is an obvious reference to something but neither I, nor anyone I've asked, nor folks on FanFare, seem to get the joke. Any ideas? [No major spoilers in the question, but I can't speak for the answers, obvs.] [more inside]
TravelFilter: Niagara Falls at Thanksgiving (US side)
My family is planning a little reunion for Thanksgiving in Niagara Falls, NY. We don't have valid passports so we need to stay on the US side. Aside from The Falls, what else should we see? Especially seeking Covid-friendly activities like walks or even outdoor dining.

unprecedented acorn abundance: anomaly or illusion?
I live in a Brooklyn neighborhood with a lot of oak trees, and it feels like this autumn there have been waaaaay more acorns than in any of the 20 previous autumns I've been around here. Can any Northeastern US naturalists confirm it's been a big acorn season this year and maybe explain why?

Do you recognize these comics/illustration prints?
I rescued this gorgeous pair of framed prints from a thrift store in Astoria. They looked so familiar to me, like something I'd seen before by an illustrator or comics artist I knew, but had passed up previously. But I can find no record of what they might be. They're each in a limited edition of 50, initialed MAM or MANI. The orange one is a surreal Map of the Known World, and the purple one is an adorable haunted-house rock band. Do you recognize them?
How to kill 3-4 hours on Sunday in Manhattan in air conditioned comfort
I'm meeting up with a friend on Sunday for an early brunch in Manhattan. We'll sort where to eat pretty easily. But then we have a couple of hours to kill before I take the bus out of Port Authority.
It's also going to be 100 degrees. [more inside]

Is there anything I should consider about where to rent a car from?
(That last one seems like an odd question but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Our plan is to get a car and leave the evening of the last day, drive south for 3 or so hours and get a hotel and then do the rest of the trip.) [more inside]

Where is a good place to watch Game of Thrones in NY?
I'm looking for a place to watch Game of Thrones tomorrow night in New York, preferably Manhattan (or near a subway/bus that will actually be running), somewhere relaxed with drinks that are NY reasonable to cheap. Any suggestions?
NJ Transit the day before Thanksgiving
I'm considering making a day trip to New York to see a matinee the day before Thanksgiving. How crowded will the NJ Transit northeast corridor line to/from Hamilton NJ be? Will I be able to find a seat? I will of course do my best to avoid rush hour, but I've been worried it might be super busy leaving New York in the evening if everybody is trying to go visit their families in NJ.
NY/NJ travel: turbo wedding hygiene edition
Mr. Armeowda and I are flying into New York for a wedding in mid-December. His obligations the day before will not allow for an early departure, ergo: red-eye! We’ll leave late the night before, and touch down at JFK around 6 AM the day of the wedding. We’ll need to reach Metuchen by high noon. Complication: somewhere in there, we want a chance to shower, primp, and change clothes. Is this doable? [more inside]
NYC moving company recommendations
So, I'm in the market for a moving company. All of my previous moves have involved fairly informal, relaxed building regimes where it was OK to use a "man with van" service from the Village Voice classifieds or random strangers from TaskRabbit to move in or out of the building. This new place is a little different. They're more uptight. Among other things, they require a certificate of insurance from the moving company in order to approve the move-in. [more inside]
secret knowledge to buying a co-op in New York (not Manhattan)?
With some work-related changes (yay!) my partner and I may be able to afford to buy at the low end of the co-op market in New York, having rented for the last 8 years (we're mostly looking at northern Queens). Think listing price $200-$250K, maintenance usually around $300-500/mo. It seems straightforward, but is there some secret info I'm missing that will make this impossible? [more inside]
Is it practical for my out-of-state parents to sell my car for me?
I live in New York City and am preparing to sell my car. What's the feasibility of having my parents in Minnesota help me sell it there instead? This would really beat the hassle of dealing with prospective buyers in NYC while I'm busy with work and the car is parked in random places on the street getting grimy every day. My parents are happy to help and have plenty of free time to entertain offers. And research indicates I could potentially get a higher price in Minneapolis compared to NYC. Questions follow: [more inside]

What state taxes am I responsible for?
I just got a remote programming job. The company is headquartered in Illinois (and IL state taxes are being withdrawn from my paycheck). I live in NYC (which means both NY state tax and NYC resident tax but those are not being withdrawn from my paycheck). Does anyone out there have experience with this situation? Especially the part about living in NY state or even NYC (because NY state has particularly strong ideas about who pays taxes).

Brooklyn Apartment Hunting
I've recently accepted a job in Brooklyn. I'll have about $1,900 to spend on rent per month (less would be wonderful, obviously). I'm willing to live with a roomie, but would be open to a studio if that was at all possible in that price range (research suggests it's not). What are good options for places to look, given some criteria below the jump? [more inside]
Digging deeply for "miner" details about a prospecting adventure!
Hello, AskMeFi! Recently, I was given generous notice by my main client that my services will not be required from Friday, April 28th through Thursday, May 4th 2017; as they need travel out of state. This is significant news, as it will be the first I have had off in over two years of working ludicrous hours, seven days per week. Lower Manhattan Quick Tourism Hits
Big family wedding coming up in early December in NYC. There will be a lot of family gatherings going on, so there won't really be time for us to do whole day tourism schleps. We will be staying in Tribeca and I'm looking for any and all recommendations for fun, interesting, cool things to do (in December) that are quick and easy to get to from where we're staying, and won't take all day to experience. Things that we can run out and do in an hour or two in between family events. General interests inside. [more inside]

Where should I eat tonight in NYC?

What steps can I take now that my mom's been scammed out of $2,000?
Today, a guy called up my elderly mother, pretending to be me, with a far-fetched story about 'me' traveling in a car that was speeding, and yada yada yada, the police needed $2,000 wired to them so that this incident wouldn't go on my 'permanent record'. The phone number the 'policeman' gave was a 514 area code (Montreal). My mother used Western Union to wire the scammers the money. She lives in New York City. Yes, I've told her not to give any information over the phone, and yes, the con story is nonsensical in several ways, not least of which is her incorrectly recognizing her son's voice-My question is, do we have any chance of identifying and prosecuting these guys? The victim is in NYC, the perps were impersonating me and a (corrupt) San Francisco policeman, and they were using a Montreal phone number, which may also have been stolen/spoofed. Any insight appreciated. Be careful out there!

Around the Big Apple in 0.33 days (with a baby and 4 retirees)
My relatives are coming to visit the big apple and I would be chaperoning them around on a site-seeing tour.
The problem is that they are elderly (are retired), from another culture & country (India), a group of 5 and there is a very young baby ( couple of months old) traveling with them. This makes using subways, or taking long walks or using bicycles a difficult proposition.
What would be the best way to give them a good NYC experience? [more inside]

Nice nails improve one's outlook
Looking for apartments is rough on my sister so I want to make it up to her, but I don't know where anything is, plus I don't understand manicure terminology, really. Where's a nice mani/pedi place near a subway (either Columbus Circle or Parsons; or somewhere along the F or E)? She likes shellac and gelish; she'll probably want to become a regular is she likes it. Let's say around $50 or less for mani plus polish unless that's not realistic; advise me. Points for friendly, family-owned business or other charming features.
Dating in NYC?
No, seriously, why am I having zero luck? I ended a long-term relationship in June. I'm still getting over it, but I want to get back on that damn horse. I moved to NYC for grad school in August, and I have had zero (literally, 0) luck with men since the breakup. [more inside]
Dining out in NYC when you're rocking a corset
I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
