Best home/other care for seriously ill dementia patient, NE Queens, NY

I hope this question is specific enough. (& not too personal/specific.) My father lives in Bayside, Queens. He’s 90, & has dementia. 3 weeks ago he had surgery, then two weeks in hospital (one in ICU), then to a rehab that ranked well but is actively shit (forgot to give him his anti-psychotic seroquel the first night, were dismissive about his fall risk, lies about everything), so we’re considering taking him home for care. (My stepmother was caring for him at home before the surgery, we all just want him comfortable & happy, however it goes.) [more inside]

Panic level: surprise cancelled health plan

I’m on maternity leave in New York (official, getting family leave money) and I just found out my workplace insurance coverage for me and my newborn has been canceled as of June 1st. Work says they are looking into it and will have it fixed ASAP- but oh my god. Does anyone know what this even means? [more inside]

Pregnant in New York: foreign, partly insured, need prenatal care help

My unmarried partner and I are pregnant for the first time, while on a six-month working trip to NYC (four months left). We found out on the weekend and in order to be (partly) covered by our insurance for prenatal care, we need to provide a LOT of information to the insurance company: chosen providers, required tests, costs, etc. We don’t have a clue where to start with this: not just because this is our first pregnancy, but also because the American health care system is so foreign to us. We need help on how to start choosing a temporary care provider and… well… everything else! Can you help? [more inside]

Neighbor wants to replace wall separating our gardens, what do I do?

My NYC townhouse has a garden in the back. The garden has a wall around it, which has been there for decades. Two nearby trees has caused it to bow out of alignment toward my neighbor's garden, though not dramatically so. My neighbor claims in a letter to me that the wall will one day collapse into her garden, and wants us to share the cost of replacing the wall, before that happens, with a fence. She also said that if I don't agree to do this, I better make sure that my insurance covers the possible damage to her property that a collapse could cause. I think my neighbor (who is wealthy) just wants a new fence for aesthetic reasons so it matches other fencing on her property, and that the wall is fine -- and I have some questions for the hive-mind... NY Medicaid woes

When I turned 26 a few weeks ago, I was summarily dropped from the health insurance my mother gets through her job ( I was eligible to stay until 26 b/c of a disability). Now, I'm facing a nightmarish bureaucracy trying to get enrolled in managed care before the 31st. Help me shovel some snowflakes out of my way so I can actually do this right. [more inside]

Fire in apartment below--rebuilding/insurance questions

[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment. This is in NYC, and I have no renter's insurance. [more inside]

Bringing an out of state car to New York

In a month or so, I will be buying a used car from a relative in a far away state to bring to New York state (not city). What do I need to do to be in compliance with the law, regarding insurance and registration? I already have a NY state license.

Minor accident, major headache

I was hit by a car 2 weeks ago. It was minor enough that I didn't even file a police report, just got the insurance information. But I'm wondering about collecting the small expenses it's incurred from the insurance company. [more inside]

Renter's insurance with two twists

Renter's insurance and travel, special libelous snowflake edition: I live in New York City and want renter's insurance that (a) covers libel and (b) will cover my wife's nice (~$2k with lenses) camera *when she is travelling*. I can't get a straight answer out of any insurance companies on what their policies actually cover. Can anyone recommend a company? [more inside]
