What's after numberblocks

My 5 year old son learned math from NumberBlocks. Like in two weeks over last winter break, he went from knowing how to count to adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, squaring, cubing, negative numbers. etc. etc. In Montessori he built up this skills He LOVES numberblocks. But he's definitely ready to add new math concepts like exponents (which he's already doing) and fractions and more thinking about negative numbers. And I'm ready to not hear the NumberBlocks theme ever again. Is there a show like numberblocks (in that it really gets at understanding concepts) for more advanced math? Not interested in apps or ads. [more inside]

Square One TV for today's fourth-grader

I loved Square One TV, the math show for elementary schoolers, sooo much when I was 9. But part of what I liked was that it made math seem sort of adult and hip to me, with references to MTV and pop culture. My kid would find all the cultural references completely baffling; I barely understood them in 1994. What kind of content exists to make recreational math seem at least a little cool that way for today's kid? [more inside]

What are some fun, "lateral" math concepts/books for a 2nd grader

My second grader loves math. In school learning multiplication and fractions, and he's mastered addition and subtraction. I'd like to buy him some activity books to encourage his interest. Ideally these would not just be learning 3rd and 4th grade math a year or two early. Instead, I'd like to find other, adjacent topics for him to explore. I've had some luck with logic puzzles, and a little with coding. What else should I look for? Specific book/workbook recommendations are especially appreciated.

What are good resources for teaching math to grade school kids at home?

I'd like to supplement my 7 year old kid's math education at home. Ideally without busting out the iPad. Workbooks are fine but the ones we've encountered seem to be better for drilling than teaching. Are there any great books/games/tools that actually help teach math to kids this age?

recommend youtube math channels for 9 year olds

My kid (9 1/2) loves watching youtube videos about math problems, but the ones that arrive by algorithmic suggestion have subpar content with a robo voice that never goes over the answers. He is more confused than engaged, but loves math enough to keep clicking on the suggestions. Do parents with more youtube experience have any suggestions? We're not looking for super advanced or complicated problems. Challenging or tricky arithmetic stuff that exploits the order of operations (or whatever it's called) is what he seems to like.

2 year old son loves numbers - how can I nurture his talent?

My 2 year old son loves numbers. He can count by himself well into the 50s and can tell you what number he's looking at to at least as high as 110. As for me, well, numbers and I have never been the best of friends. How can I, a numbers-adverse dad, encourage and nurture his talent? [more inside]

If an geeky child is traveling South at 839 MPH, and his nerdy dad is going North at...

My son, who is finishing up third grade, loves math and especially the basic Algebra he's been doing. He is actually sad to be leaving school for the summer because he's so into it. How can I keep this going for him over the summer? Fun books, board games, computer (on-line and OSX) games? [more inside]

Avoiding the "summer slide"

Primary school gets out tomorrow. I know it is common for kids to have a "summer slide" where they forget a lot of what they've learned over the year. Teaching Math Facts at 15

My sweet son has many disabilities--type 1 diabetes, ADHD, depression. At 15, he just confessed with great pain that he doesn't know his multiplication tables very well. Explains a lot. Any really wonderful suggestions that don't infantilize and humiliate him. Ones that work? Any personal success stories and moral support will make me heart you.
