Still Covid-positive on home antigen tests on Day 20

I’ve heard people can test positive for weeks or months, but that seems to be on PCR tests, and/or people with underlying health issues or who had severe symptoms. It seems unusual for someone like me. Is it? What might it mean? Data and anecdata both welcome. [more inside]

Covid-19 and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

I have hEDS. For me, it's not too bad. I'm reading an article that (if I understand it) says the spike protein in covid (and the vaccines) damages collagen in a way that isn't an issue for most people but is for people with EDS. I have been getting all my shots. (I am also still masking fastidiously.) [more inside]

Zinc supplements for covid-19 recovery?

A friend’s doctor recommends zinc supplements (50mg, 1x per day, along with 2000mg vitamin C) to people who are recovering from covid. This strikes me as borderline quackery even if it is probably harmless, but I am not an expert on such things. What’s the deal? [more inside]

Do I need a PCR test?

I have had a sore throat since yesterday. This morning I have a mild runny nose and a very mild sinus headache. My5 year old son has had a quite runny nose and some phlegmy cough since TUesday or Wednesday. I have negative covid tests. I'm going on a trip on Monday and today is the last day to cancel/change without losing a lot of money. Should I pay for a PCR test or can I assume it's not covid? Also, visit immunocompromised mom sunday? [more inside]

Check for recent asymptomatic Covid before getting new booster?

As far as I know, I haven’t had Covid yet. No positive tests and no symptoms. This seems really unlikely, though, since at minimum 70% of the US population has been infected, according to CDC data from July. So if I’ve actually had a recent asymptomatic case, how should that inform my timing for getting the updated booster — wouldn’t it be best to wait 2-3 months as is recommended for anyone who’s had a symptomatic case? Should asymptomatic people try to determine whether they have, in fact, had a recent infection before getting a booster? [more inside]

If you have a sore throat can you rely on a throat swab?

My son and I woke up sick. Me with a very sore throat, him with a runny nose (started yesterday morning) and vomiting. The obvious concern is covid and we cancelled our visit to Grandma for today. But I just did a home test, including a very thorough throat swab (and brain swab). It seems like whatever virus I have is very obviously in my throat, right? If that is negative am I fairly certain it's not covid? Also, are we still going camping on thursday? Yay or Nay? [more inside]

I have first vaccine boost. When will new OMICRON be easily available?

I got first two vaccines (Moderna.) I got one booster. Really need to update next booster but if possible would prefer latest/greatest booster which also addresses OMICRON. Any idea when it will be easily available? (Austin Texas if that matters.)

Still positive after 21 days, wtf?

I had COVID, June 30th was day 0, and I would describe my symptoms as mild-medium miserable. I was prescribed and took the Paxlovid treatment. I have only a lingering light dry cough, and have been fever-free for 9 days. I'm still testing positive on the home rapid antigen tests (I've tried 3 different manufacturers product) and I'm still mostly isolating because there's no guidance that I can find online about what happens after day 10. Am I still spewing plague or what? [more inside]

Household COVID safety

Partner and I (triple vaxxed) share a home with my in-laws (just had 4th booster this week). My partner and I tested positive (first time ever for both of us) for COVID last week. Partner and I then started wearing masks inside and isolated ourselves. It's been over a week and now my father-in-law appears to be symptomatic (dry cough, sore/scratchy throat), but so far testing negative. Need to determine next steps to prevent further spread in our home, as well as re-infection given BA.5's documented propensity for re-infections. Details under the fold. [more inside]

CDC say wha?

Should I wait until I have a negative result on a rapid antigen test before leaving COVID isolation--even if it's been 10+ days? Everything I am reading says to go by a symptom/time-based strategy for ending isolation. UK: Walk-in first Covid jab if not with a GP?

Is it possible to go to a walk-in centre in the UK, queue and get your first Covid vaccine shot that day if you haven't been registered with a GP for decades but are provably legally resident in the country? What requirements might there be and what should be expected? Context is someone who is generally avoidant and legitimately anxious of medical settings as well as "having to justify [them]self" but equally has continually masked and Hands Face Spaced since the pandemic started. Someone who genuinely wants to get their jab and would be over the moon if e.g. Nurse Christmas knocked on their door to deliver it today, but might be discouraged if they felt "turned away"
