Giftfilter: books about food

I'm looking for interesting and reasonably short books about food for a gift. This is for someone especially interested in wine, mushrooms, fermented foods and veganism.
Of the books I gave him before, he really liked:
Cork Dork
Naked Wine
Extra Virginity
The Mushroom Hunters
Books I never heard feedback on so I assume were not enjoyed as much:
The Third Plate
Tangled Vines
I'd prefer fairly quick reads, say 250-350 pages. I'm not looking for cookbooks. Thank you!

What aspects of veganism is he interested in?

Best answer: I recommend this book to everyone I see, basically, but it seems to fit your needs well. "Salt" by Mark Kurlansky, readily available at any local bookshop or the Big A. https://www.amazon.com/Salt-World-History-Mark-Kurlansky/dp/0142001619

Response by poster: He has been vegan for maybe 8 years, mostly for health reasons. He's probably somewhat interested in the environmental benefits and I've never heard him talk about animal rights

Best answer: I went through my Goodreads and pulled out food stuff I've given four or five stars. A couple of these are on cheese, but both of them are very good if his reading about food is more omnivorous than his palate (as mine is).
Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm by David Mas Masumoto
Hippie Food: How Back-to-the-Landers, Longhairs, and Revolutionaries Changed the Way We Eat by Jonathan Kauffman
Eating History: Thirty Turning Points in the Making of American Cuisine by Andrew F. Smith
Baking Powder Wars: The Cutthroat Food Fight that Revolutionized Cooking by Linda Civitello
Eating Right in America: The Cultural Politics of Food and Health by Charlotte Biltekoff
A Revolution in Eating: How the Quest for Food Shaped America by James McWilliams
How the Other Half Ate: A History of Working-Class Meals at the Turn of the Century by Katherine Leonard Turner
Goat Song: A Seasonal Life, A Short History of Herding, and the Art of Making Cheese by Brad Kessler
The Rituals of Dinner: The Origins, Evolution, Eccentricities and Meaning of Table Manners by Margaret Visser
The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese by Michael Paterniti
The Perfect Fruit: Good Breeding, Bad Seeds, and the Hunt for the Elusive Pluot by Chip Brantley

Response by poster: Thank you for all these great suggestions! I'm going to get Hippie Food this year and have gift ideas for the next decade now! The Mushroom at the End of the World, The Big Oyster by Mark Kurlansky, and Epitaph for a Peach also look especially appealing. More ideas are always welcome.

The mushroom at the end of the world is a fascinating book on the matsutake trade and its relation to various systems. Cannot recommend that book enough- it was part of a class I took.
