Giftfilter: books about food

I'm looking for interesting and reasonably short books about food for a gift. This is for someone especially interested in wine, mushrooms, fermented foods and veganism.

Of the books I gave him before, he really liked:
Cork Dork
Naked Wine
Extra Virginity
The Mushroom Hunters

Books I never heard feedback on so I assume were not enjoyed as much:
The Third Plate
Tangled Vines

I'd prefer fairly quick reads, say 250-350 pages. I'm not looking for cookbooks. Thank you!

Best answer: In Vino Duplicitas is a good book about a wine forger (the wine forger really) and it's not too long.

The mushroom at the end of the world is a fascinating book on the matsutake trade and its relation to various systems. Cannot recommend that book enough- it was part of a class I took.

What aspects of veganism is he interested in?

Best answer: I recommend this book to everyone I see, basically, but it seems to fit your needs well. "Salt" by Mark Kurlansky, readily available at any local bookshop or the Big A. https://www.amazon.com/Salt-World-History-Mark-Kurlansky/dp/0142001619

Response by poster: He has been vegan for maybe 8 years, mostly for health reasons. He's probably somewhat interested in the environmental benefits and I've never heard him talk about animal rights

Response by poster: Thank you for all these great suggestions! I'm going to get Hippie Food this year and have gift ideas for the next decade now! The Mushroom at the End of the World, The Big Oyster by Mark Kurlansky, and Epitaph for a Peach also look especially appealing. More ideas are always welcome.
